Got a question about fixer's. Are all the same "one size fits all" so to speck. I have used Ilfird Rapid Fixer and currently using Kodak Fixed and have really not noticed any difference. I use my fixer for both film and paper.

Well, i only am an apprentice at the moment with a few years experiance.
They seem about the same, recently i have noticed the Ilford Rapid Fixer is not of the same strenght as before and the soak-time has been about the double to remove the excess-silver from films (before 2-4' ok, now 5-15' necessary).
Would like to know which is the best, need to try the Adofix soon that i got recently.

Rapid fixers are faster obviously, also you may want to read about hardener, some have it some don't, which is better depends on what your are doing for instance if you are going to do toning or bleaching you don't want a hardening fixer.

The active ingredient of rapid fixer is ammonium thiosulfate. The active ingredient of 'regular' fixer is sodium thiosulfate. The thiosulfate part is what dissolves the undeveloped silver halide. Ammonium thiosulfate however, is much more soluble in water than is the sodium salt (170 g/100mL vs 70 g/100 mL), so therefore it is easier to get into the emulsion where it does it's work, and to wash out of the emulsion, where it would do damage if left in there.
