What surprised me (and the writer as well): stopping down a lens INCREASES flare. So it was an urban legend only, the rule pretending the opposite.

I got interested since i was amazed of the lack of flare in the 35mm f/1.8 lens of my little yashica electro35 CC, see
here.

Interesting... thanks for the link. I've always thought that stopping down would be better for flare, guess I'll have to really test that out.

I'll just have to find something completely black now.
 
I thought the Leica observations were interesting, that even back then, the R Summicron 50mm was better at flare control than the M version. Funny that- it sort of lends a bit of truth to the nay-sayers over on that... "Other" forum. Wish I could see modern numbers. Betcha flare control is much better all around for all manufacturers.
