I read on another thread that the newer Canon 580EX II will work on the M8. Does anyone know if the older version will?? I have one and would like to try it, but am proceeding cautiously.

Thanks,

No I had an older version 580EX. It doesn't have sensor to meter independently like I believe the 2nd version does.
A low shoe voltage version of the Vivitar 283 will do the trick. I use one occasionally with my m8.

I guess my initial question regarding just sticking it on was to whether is would cause any damage to the camera. Sometimes electronics will short out if not connected properly. If I know it wont do any harm, I would. I guess I still haven't gotten a clear answer on that.

Absolutely no harm to be done with modern day flashes. My canon mount yongnuo flash trigger doesn't work though my yongnuo flash, But my YN560, a copy of the 580ex does. It only has a single pin the in hotshot mount. Works very well in manual, IMO much better than Leica TTL.
