flash for RD-1?

Hi everyone,

what flash units are you using on the RD-1, given that none is proprietary to it?
Especially low volume flash bodies, not full blown SLR-tops?
thanks in advance for throwing some light onto this for me (yes, yes, full punn intended 🙂😀

I use my Nikon SB800 in the A mode with good results

I use a new Vivitar 283 with it. No need to be concerned about high trigger voltages, as the last (discontinued as of 2006, after about 25 years of production) of these flash used trigger voltages low enough to be safe for modern camera flash circuits. It is indeed top-heavy and feels not too balanced when held on the side for vertical shots. But otherwise, its non-dedicated, multiple auto-flash modes does a great job.

Make sure you go to RichC's web site for a bit more info about flash units for the RD1 (LINK). There is a web site on Rich's page about flash units that lists the unit voltages.

I've two Nikon units, an SB-28 and one of the newer 600's. I've been using the SB28 on my RD1s with it set on "A". I find it easier to set up manually than the 600 when inputing the various options.

I'm sorry, I'm sometimes not as clear as I intend to be. You're right. What I meant to say is that the sb-28 works great on the rd1. It is a very flexible flash on the rd1 camera. With the sb28, you can dial in the flash amount quickly be just changing the aperture value in the menu. If I didn't have a D70, I would sell the 600 tomorrow. But since the price of D70's has taken a belly flop into the deep end of the depreciation pool, I've decided to just hang on to the camera and flash.

Going from a DSLR world to the RF has me re-examinng the definition of "portable", after years of trying to convince myself that the 1D was portable. 😀
I have calculated the space required to carry the RD-1 with the 40mm and 15mm Voigts is the same as the case for my CANO 300mm F.4 L IS!!!! Oh the joys...

I also own a SB-600 and I've been wondering about using it with my R-D1. Is it OK to do so? Have you any recommendations for settings?

Well, the 600 didn't blow anything up when I tried on my RD1s 😉
However, the like esspreso's post (#5) and mine (#6) the 600 is not as flexable set-up wise as the older sb28, and it must be used in manual mode on the RD1.
