Hey all,

I am in a quandy for flashes. My goal with the flashes is make shift and on site studio portraits (figure two to three). And event/wedding use.

I am currently looking at the following:

Metz 60-CT1
Metz 60-CT4
Metz 70 MZ-5
Metz 70 MZ-4
Quantum T4D
Quantum T2D
Sunpak 120J Auto

I would be using it with a Contax G1, Contax G2, Olympus E-1, Contax SLR, and Minolta Maxxum 5. So with a crapload of different gear.

Ideas?

Thanks all!

If you are going to use a lot of different cameras with it, you might not want a dedicated type flash. Also, if you are shooting weddings and lot of other run-around type of events, you might want to consider a handle (potato-masher) type flash. It will help you control red-eye, give you fast recyling times with variable output control and generally be less of a strain on your camera's accessory shoe and top.

My wife and I both use Sunpak 544 series handle mount flashes. We picked it because it uses 6-AA batteries, which are easier to carry around then the size C's that the next larger Sunpak uses. It recycles in about 10-11 seconds. When the recycle time gets to about 15-17 seconds, the batteries get moved to Walkman until they die.

It has variable output, but my favorite feature is a portable folding umbrella refelctor that attaches to the flash head.

We've used this model flash for close to 20 years. I've actually worn one out after the first 12, and that's a lot of flashes! It will probably cost you about $150 new.

Another good model is the Philips handle mount sold under various names (I think it was sold under the Agfa label too). It appears on e-Bay for about $10-$30. It uses 4-AA batteries and has the same output as the Sunpak. It is slightly more compact than the Sunpak, but accessories are hard to find. I don't think it is in current production.

Robert,
I've always had good results (and reliability) with Metz flashes. Never used Quantum, but hear their good. Sunpack has some "less than the best" reviews, so for pro work get the best you can afford. Good luck ~ ; - )
