Hi All.. the title says it all! Well, most of it, anyway.. i'm looking for something compact (both on the camera and on my wallet) and wondered if anyone had any thoughts on the subject? I know very little about flashes, having never needed to use one, but for some reason i've been thinking this could be an interesting camera with which to try one out. If there are any tips/tricks/insights from those with personal experience with this arrangement, i'm open to those ideas as well. Thanks in advance for the assist!

Hello,

If you haven't yet found something you like, I can suggest the Honeywell Auto/Strobonar 110. It's about 3.5 inches high. vertically oriented, and sits nicely on a half frame body. It has a guide number of 56 with 100 speed film. This model is "automatic" (thyristor); I think there were Stobonars of same size that weren't. Anyway, I keep a little piecel of tracing paper taped over the head of my Strobonar for diffusion, give an extra stop of exposure, and get good results. It can be used on a bracket with a cord or via hot shoe. It is old and you'd have to find it at a show or maybe an online auction. Sunpak made a series of small flashes (121 etc.) with models that are more recent; but, they don't seem to balance as well on a half frame body for me. Good luck.

Many thanks for the insights, delible - it's much appreciated! I'll keep an eye out for the Honeywell that you've mentioned. The ability to use it via hot-shoe or cord is extra appealing, since i could use it on my non-h.s.-equipped Pens as well. I also checked out a Canolite ED this weekend (which i believe was intended for one of Canon's 110 cameras) - at about 1 3/4" tall, the size was just about perfect, but it was marked at $20, and i couldn't get it to work.. no thanks.

I've also been interested in the Lomo ColorSplash flash, but that's raised another question: how much does the orientation of the flash matter in regards to the orientation of the film gate (ie: portrait vs. landscape) at distances of less than, say, 30ft.? Seems like a fairly obvious answer is out there somewhere, but for whatever reason, i've yet to find anything conclusive.
