The well-respected german computer magazine 'ct' has tested some (flatbed) scanners with the ability to scan 35mm films as well. I'll try to summarize the results. (The Plustek 7600i has been the only dedicated film scanner in this test.)
The values for resolution and maximum density:
Canon LiDE 700F: 1070dpi, 2.3
Canon 9000F: 1400dpi, 3.2
Epson V330: 1100dpi, 2.3
Epson V600: 1350dpi, 2.9
HP G3110: 1100dpi, n/a
Plustek ST640: 1200dpi, 1.7
Plustek 7600i: 2900dpi, 3.2
The fastest scanner (for slides) has been the Epson V330, followed by the Canon 9000F and both Plustek scanners. The testers praised the V330 for its good color, but the resolution being too low. For scans with (slightly) higher resolution they recommend the 9000F as well as the V600. Anyone with higher expectations should buy the Plustek 7600i, a Reflecta model (though none of them was in the tests) or use a professional scan service.
I think this gives a good impression about the difference between flatbed and dedicated film scanners. Anyone interested in the complete test can buy the ct magazine, issue 04/2012, or visit the very short summary: http://www.heise.de/ct/inhalt/2012/04/120/ - of course only in german language.

I don't speak German but apparently this isn't a very scientific test? I've found with my HP G4050 scanner the included software is a test of your mental stability. If this value is based on using the included software then it's more about the software than the scanner itself, albeit if you didn't own a copy of Vuescan the results are what they are.HP G3110: 1100dpi, n/a

Odd that they didn't review the most popular flatbed

This magazine is famous in Germany for its outstanding, independent and indeed very scientific reviews. The focus of this review has been flatbed scanners up to 300 Euros, being the reason for not testing Epson V700 and V750. The Plustek 7600i was included as a comparison model, to demonstrate what a dedicated film scanner (within this price range) can do.
The tests were done with the included software bundles, just as the average buyer would use the scanner.
