flavour of RFF

Administration at PNet just posted a "keep it on topic" plea. It ends with this: Please don't use this forum as a "chat" forum. While we are a community, we should not use this resource as a chat room.

I've been with RFF for a while now and there has always been an element of "chat" here. Personally I like that as it makes it feel more friendly and less formal. I hope I'm not alone in hoping RFF stays this way instead of heading in the PNet direction.

What say you all?

I have nothing against chatting threads, although I dont do it a lot. I wish I had more time for that. RF is good the way it is.

A forum is for exchange of information and general conversation. RFF is not just a keep it on topic site. Afterall, we have all made cyber friends on RFF and chatting is a way to stay in touch with them. I could implement a chat software but that would take away from the general feel of this site.

A big part of RF photography is being able to look through the viewfinder and see what's going on outside the frame. We're not as focussed as SLR folks. Likewise, chatting is what goes on outside the "frame" of our "serious" photographic discussions. Hence, it is an invaluable part of RFF.

The thing is, there's more actual community here at RFF. On photo.net, when the patrons "chat" amongst themselves, it tends to devolve into a slew of vitriol and waspish sniping. It's like one flew over the cuckoo's nest.

Worse, other patrons are completely aware of this and do what they can to throw rocks at the hive.

I think RFF is far more capable of productive chatter.

Personally, I really like the feeling of chatting with other rff members within the various threads. Definitely makes this place feel much more like a community.

I saw the posting on p.net and it seemed to be a turn-off as far as I am concerned. I like the informality of RFF just the way it is.

How can you know and understand someone if all you talk about is F stops?
The twists and turns of a thread are the spice of this forum, and the reason we all keep coming back. The hard info is there if you want it, but sometimes I just like to shoot the breeze with intelligent folks with similar interests.
