Flickr: curated street photography groups?

Hi everyone,

I'm a street photographer based in New York. I'm looking for elite, curated street photography groups on Flickr. Anybody have recommendations, or any interest in starting such a group with me? I would be willing to moderate the group. Anyway, I'm looking for curated groups that have a sense of community and not "dump and run." Also, if you are serious about street photography like I am, post a link to your work on flickr or follow me so I can see your stuff.

You can see an example of my work here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/131711492@N08/22335199909/

I would think "street photography", "curated" and "Flickr" being in the same sentence to slightly be an oxymoron!

EDIT: After a quick look at the few images you have on Flickr, your work is well above average. Don't worry about looking for online approval of your work - you don't need it!

Thanks for the compliment, Craig. Yeah, I'm looking mostly for a critique type group, ones where the other members might push my imagination a bit. I'm sick of the over processed, bokeh'd to death images on flickr. Looking for some solid black and white, magnum-esque photography.

I don't like facebook because, correct me if I'm wrong, people can just download any photograph you post on that website. Flickr at least restricts people from downloading your work.

On the Mac "Command-Shift-4" and you have the work at full resolution.

I'm sure there are similar on other operating systems?

Yes. There are a million reasons to dislike Facebook, but this is not one of them. It is trivial to download any image from Flickr up to the largest size on the "all sizes" page, even if the owner has disabled downloading.

Not sure what you mean by "full resolution" You are just taking a screenshot. You get a piece no more than 1000px at 72dpi. Not even printable.

Anyways there's a group on flickr that I used to join in that was HEAVILY curated I'm pretty sure its toronto only though. I left it. Couldn't get behind a lot of the images that got through moderation. Also I think the mod doesn't frequent the group.

Facebook is of course a feed from one's friends, real or imaginary.

If one hates facebook, that speaks volumes about one's friends. Personally I have a collection of smart, creative, sensitive friends on FB (some of whom are on the RFF) so for me, FB is great.

I get news about gallery openings, travel, performances, new books published, film showings, and lots of personal invitations, and yes even the occasional cute cat and dog photo. If you love your women friends, you have to allow yourself to enjoy cat photos.

You need a better printer. :) I can make a very decent 8x10 image with no fuss. I have, in the past, gone much larger using Genuine Fractals, when I had low rez originals.

Seriously what do you think anyone is going to do with images from the web, other than steal them, and put them on the web somewhere else? They will look exactly the same as they did in the original location.

Stolen screen cap images can be used for portfolios, publishing, even books, sadly it is done all the time.

jojoman2, love your photostream, instant follow for me!

I've looked into creating a street photography group in the past and unfortunately due to my busy schedule and the realization that running a curated group requires a lot of time and work, I've lost interest.

Frankly like what others have said, it is hard to define and categorize street photography.
What I might consider as street shot and love, others may not like it.

If interested, I can make you admin on the group that I started and you can help me on curating it. ie select images from the huge pool of street shots on flick and adding them to the group.

Group is https://www.flickr.com/groups/thisisstreet/

BTW, there are ways to download image files on flickr and even instagram, you just need to know how ;)

Pretty sure that, in my case, my negative opinion of Facebook speaks more about how I like to interact with my friends, rather than my friends themselves. Also, one can absolutely adore the Facebook user experience, and still have serious issues with how they collect, analyze, and exploit personal data.

What you say is true, and I recommend anyone using Facebook should not display anything publically, or include personal info like birthdates. However having said that, my personal cell phone number has been on the web for maybe 20 years, and so far no crazy has called me, other than health insurance companies, and they got it from each other.

But the vast majority of complaints I hear about facebook, are due to folks finding the posts of their friends are boring. When I was younger all my artist and photographer friends lived around me, went to the same bars etc. But now without facebook they would just be scattered and therefore out of touch, as the city where I live becomes increasingly gentrified. I used to live down the street from famous photographers and artists, now I live down the hall from investment bankers, populations change.

Honestly I don't really care how Facebook uses the data I share with them, but I assume that Messinger is not nearly as secure as Apple iMessage.

I just went through PS now to calculate sizes. a 1000x600 image at 72 dpi works out to ~13x8". But this is at 72 dpi. You will see pixelation. The printer has nothing to do with it.

At 240dpi (the lowest I go for a high quality print) the physical size is ~4x2.5"

I work in design and do high quality print work frequently for bus shelters and billboards. Billboards don't matter so much but bus shelters have people looking at them very closely. Printed graphics must be of the highest resolution.

Basically what I'm saying is, your 8x10 from a 1000x600 @ 72 dpi could look great from 8-10 feet away but up close it's likely not up to my standard.

Back OT! :D
