------"We’re tripling our maximum display size for Flickr Pros up to 6K so you can show your photos off in all their pixel perfect glory. The maximum display size of photos is increasing from 2048px on the longest side to 6144px (6K). Now you’ll be able to show off every single detail perfectly on all the latest monitors and displays.
The new display size will be available to all Flickr Pro subscribers next week.
What photos are affected
All new and previously uploaded photos from Flickr Pros with an original size larger than 6K will automatically be displayed in the largest size possible on Flickr, or the largest size set in your preferences. Smaller photos will be displayed in the largest size possible for the original media. The maximum display size for free members is unchanged at 2K.
Settings and controls
We love big, beautiful photos on Flickr and hope you’ll always choose to share them at the largest size we support — but of course, your specified preferences will always be respected: you can set the maximum display size in your account, as well as control who can download photos.
This is also a great time to remind you of our partnership with Pixsy, a monitoring service that can identify where photos are being used online, and give you tools to enforce your copyrights. Flickr Pros get 1,000 monitored images and 10 takedown notices free.

That´s brilliant. Upload all your photos in ultra high-res for anyone to download for free. That´s what flickr needed. They are going to kill instagram now.

If it works like the parent Smugmug site, you’ll be able to control the max size anyone can view and/or download.

This change doesn’t make an ounce of difference to people downloading stuff for free. It’s still up to the account holder to choose what size to upload and what size to allow for downloads (if any).

From what I recall by default Flickr is set to allow everyone from being able to download your images including originals.
I don't recall what the default size is for displayed/shared photos though.
IMO everyone should go through all the settings when signing up to a new service so that they know what they are getting into and configure it the way they want to.
I have a 2nd Flickr account (premium) that I use as my backup/online private album and everything is set to private, only my main Flickr account (free) can view or download images from it.
The only other setting I wish Flickr has is to password protect an album so that I can share albums to non flickr members.

I think it depends on the device display. They call it "best display size."
It is easy to turn off download originals, and I have, but people can always take a screenshot. No site that displays pictures can protect you from that so the Flickr default setting hardly matters unless you particularly care about very large resolutions.
Even for large resolutions, people can probably screenshot and stitch together Flickr loupe views (that show original resolution AFAICT) to get full size pictures even if download is off.
But are most people's pictures good enough to steal? it is nice to think that about our stuff but at the end of the day much of the paranoia about theft is probably based on wishful thinking.

What bother me more than open theft is the data being used without our explicit consent or any remuneration for machine learning purposes to enrich multibillion dollar companies. We are basically all working for free to enrich a tiny percentage of individuals in this country beyond any historical measure.

For the moment at least, I do not think I will put up anything greater than 2048 pixels on a side anyway. Certainly not putting my 24MP and larger images up.

The download stuff? It's all meaningless. Screenshots.
I upload full-size files and use Flickr as another backup. I have my photos on a Creative Commons license, which has worked well for me.
Besides, what I sell are prints that I've made. The energy required worrying about this stuff isn't worth it to me. I need that for my work.

Because you set what the largest size is you want flickr to display your photos. Loupe will not magically display your photos at higher resolution. YOU are in control.

I just logged out and checked my own pictures (I'm not pro). Loupe seems to enlarge my images to more than 2048px (I have some at more than double that); indeed loupe appears to show the original size (significantly larger than my 4k screen). It's just that the loupe won't show you the whole image at one time - I think that is the loophole to the largest-size control you quote (or shall I say loupehole).

I think he's suggesting you DON'T upload a large size. Flickr will allow large sizes, but that doesn't mean you have to go that route.
