Flickr

I stopped posting images to Flickr a few years ago when I saw them reposted on other web sites without me getting money or credit.

I've used Flickr for awhile now because it's easy. I watermark my uploads with digimarc, but still worry a little. Short of going the route of having one's own website, are there better alternatives such as Tumblr or other similar services? I'd love to hear other folks' experiences with alternatives.

Ever since Yahoo turned Flickr into Facebook I haven't been able to find anything. How do you get to the place where set your preferences?

Not saying its a great move on their part but if you chose to allow anyone to use your photos for any purpose at the time you uploaded them...

I think its a questionable business decision on their part since it alters peoples relationship with flickr but if anyone else could have downloaded and done this anyway if the uploader selected the CC license.

Copyright issues aside, I can recommend tumblr since it gives you pretty much unlimited control over how you present/load/store your images since it allows you to build your interface yourself. Flickr has few benefits and on the whole is ugly and just a really bad way of looking at pictures.

I still love flickr. I've always had my account set to "all rights reserved."

I think the flickr UI is better than ever. It amazes me that regular users of the web (no matter age) have such difficulty with change.

And look, if you want to make sure no one steals or re-uses your photographs you are best never posting them to any web site ever. Think tumblr is good spot? OMG. No.

I'm not saying this is a good move on flickr's part (in fact maybe terrible) as they are likely catching many people unaware. But it is not unlawful if that is the CC setting the user selected. And you know the deal: "ignorance of the law excuses no one."

No issue with flickr attribution here, has been all rights reserved since day one.

I don't mind the interface, nor the broad social media tone. I get what I pay for.

Same here.

I have no issues with Flickr. I don't necessarily like all the wacky ways they have changed the UI, but I mostly use it as a means of getting my photos onto a cheap web server so I can link them to other places.

Same here. I like the massive amount of "free" storage and use flickr as a sort of BU.
My most precious images are private on flickr yet I can still link versions here or elsewhere on the web (they are at that point still not viewable on flickr).
Anything I leave public on flickr is something the public can have.
I don't see the issue if one operates in this way.

I like flickr & don't give a crap what they do. If you are so worried about your photos that you upload to the Internet from being stolen, used by others then don't upload. To me photography is a hobby, but that just me. How else do you expect flickr to make money since they don't charge you 20 bucks a year any more. Just my 2 cents which ain't worth much.

You need to sign into your account and then click on your icon top right corner. Then select settings, privacy and permissions. Look for default settings for uploading images. There's quite a few options but I have it set to all rights.

No, I'm not worried but I thought that there could be a lot of people who unwittingly have their settings set to Creative Commons and could unwillingly and unknowingly be 'robbed ' by Flickr. It wrong for any company, or person, to steal your property and that includes images too. They are your property and yours alone. No-one has the right to use your images without your permission and what Flickr is doing is wrong. Even the founder of Flickr says that, just read the article that I linked too in my original post.
I'm being a good neighbour to other users by pointing this out and I'd expect the same from other Flickr users to do the same if they found a problem that they also felt needed highlighting.

You can also click You -> Organize -> Select All - > Drag into Window - > Permissions - > Change Licensing

This way you can set everything you have previously uploaded if you aren't certain.

All my Flickr images are licensed under "all rights reserved" and I have allowed a "request a license" link on the side. I've also disallowed downloading the original image by anyone else but me. My settings are quite conservative but I've never had any problems so far.

Flickr has been good to me. Many of my images have made it to the "Explore", a daily short list of remarkable images. Most of them are b&w film images. I've slowly found a small but growing audience for my images (many RFFers included, thank you everyone!)

All rights reserved, and only upload small images. There is only so much you can do these days - if not this, something else.

Thanks for taking the time, that is just what I needed.
