Flying to the U.S. tomorrow. Do I carry-on my cameras?

Okay, with all of this going on, and after hearing that cameras have been banned on UK flights, should I bring my cameras with me on the plane or not? I have a Yashica TLR, a QL17 and a Nikon FM2. They're my babies, and I cannot leave them behind. What do you guys suggest I do?

I'd carry some K.Y. jelly, just in case. 😉

Don't confuse the ban in the U.K. with the U.S. I'd keep on watching the news, though. I think you should be prepared to check them in, just in case.

LOL. Imagine what the techincians would think when they do somebody's abdominal X-Ray to discover three cameras inside! I guess I will take them with me. No KY Jelly though...

LOL... no, I meant for when you get your cavity search!

IM flying to New Mexico Saturday . We take off at 630am. Guess I should get there by what, 4am to get through security? What to do with my Bessa?

I'd suggest keeping all cameras UNLOADED (much like how you'd carry.. oh.. hand guns and various other weaponry 😀)

Ask for a hand check (that's for security...not to get your rocks off 😀) and let them look inside the camera to ensure that there's no "funny stuff" going on (and that means opening up the backs).

You may have to explain to some of these folks that these are FILM cameras and show them what film looks like... and I'm serious about this one.. because some of them may ask you where the "screen" is or crap like that.

Good luck to whoever's travelling,
Dave

I've had such awful luck with OTHER things at airports...

If there's a written policy at the airport from which you are flying, and all between, try and get 'em. Flying out of Lisbon I wasn't permitted to carry on matches at the security checkpoint: they allowed the lighters that the ticket counter said would be confiscated...

Boats are starting to look good again.

cameras and planes... oh my!

cameras and planes... oh my!

If I was flying

Plan A: leave the camera and buy a disposable when you arrive
Plan B: take the car instead
Plan C: don't travel
Plan D:don't walk in Hollywood Hills because it is suspicious
Plan E: stay home and lock the doors

thats what security wants

Yes, but our friend is coming to visit from Guatemala. I am sure all international flights are complying with the regs, but the departing locations can best inform those boarding in their terminals.

Not sure about the UK, but I've travelled quite a bit in the States by plane in the last few years, always with a film camera, and have always put them in my carry-on. I've packed the cameras unloaded so there would be no problem if they wanted them opened to examine them more thoroughly. The only incident I had was a screener going through my bag, looking at my FED 2 for a moment, and saying, "Neat camera."

Change your plans if you can. Passengers and security folks are too edgy now. If you must travel with a camera, keep it to a minimum. I suspect there may be a camera ban coming as I just read that electronic flash units were possibly to be used as ignition devices.

I flew to NC from Houston this morning (9:30 am). I had my ZI and my Super Ikonta with me in my carrry-on with no problems. Today, as long as you were not carrying liquids or gels of any kind, it was buisness as usual. I got through security in Houston in less than 5 minutes. International (especially from the UK) might be a different story.
