"CAMERA HAS NEVER HAD FILM IN IT !! NEW!! NEW!! NEW!!!" seems like a reasonable explanation for the (IMO absurd) price.
Auctions such as this serve to prove that camera possession is definitely a different hobby than photography.

It seems bizarre that one of the world's most usable SLRs is set to fetch a crazy price because it hasn't actually been used.
I would imagine that Nikon would have made a sh*tload of these compared to most model Leicas so it's not really that rare either ... it's already gone beyond a sensible price and is now headed for insanity IMO!

Hello Keith,
KEH has been selling LN body only FM3A for these prices for the last couple of years. I haven't been following prices recently (I have more than one) but with that lovely lens as well it doesn't seem too inflated. I have no idea how many were manufactured but they don't seem to appear too often for sale.

Hi Mark,
I don't have too much issue with the $810.00 it's currently reached because as you say it is a nice set ... but I can see that possibly doubling by the auction's end.
But I may be wrong of course ... all part of the fun of an ebay 'watch list' I guess!

OK Keith,
I agree....1600 is pretty rich but I guess if you are worth 10 mil and you want one now....its all relative I suppose. I am just glad mine are tucked up in their bag behind me. I do love them though<s>

Got my FM3A from KEH for $380 with one tiny paint chip otherwise perfect. Then got a CV 40mm/f2 new $399. So $800 is about right for this kit.

Well-known
That 45mm Nikon P-lens is some sort of a collector item. It's a Tessar I've heard, and quite soft one too. So this might partly explain high bidding.

It's a Tessar I've heard
Tessars are a dime a dozen. Even the original 1960s GN-Nikkor pancake lens (a 45/2.8 Tessar as well) sells for something like $200. The newer 45mm pancake is nifty with its AI-P chip and everything, but doesn't warrant that much hype IMHO. I'd prefer a Voigtländer. If all you want is a Tessar, get an Industar-50-2 in M42, it should cost like $10. For Nikon you can modify it by moving the infinity stop and sanding down a standoff ring, for Canon and similar systems you can use it with a simple adapter.
