This is really odd. I was looking at some 12x8 and 10x8 prints from my M8 and noticed that it was focussing behind where I intended - I had thought it was the M8 sensor making the lens look bad until I noticed the sharpness was behind where I expected.

The odd thing is that it is fine at closest focus of 0.7m and at infinity it's the distances in-between where I am having the problem. I've read about focussing problems across the focussing range, but I can't imagine why it would be bad in the middle but good at the edges...

Anyone had this before?

You can see the error on the 21/4!

I could see a small error creeping in if one or more adjustments were off and some errors cancelled each other.

But if the error is so large that the 21/4 shows it, I would expect that the RF mechanism itself is not returning to position quickly enough. So: you think it is in focus, but it "hung".

Make sure that the RF action is smooth across the range. Second thing to check is the eccentricity adjustment. I'm sure there are more possible reasons, I have not encountered them all. I would have it serviced.

Cheers Brian, the 21/4 only shows it at f/4 and close - I normally scale-focus that lens at f/8-11 and never noticed.

You're right, this needs to go to Solms.

Hello Jaap,

This is with the CV40/1.4, CV21/4, CV28/1.9 & Summitar.
Then you have a problem except with the Summitar. Leica will not touch a third-party lens/M8 combo. They will test the camera and if needed (which I doubt) will adjust the rangefinder to spec. And they will correct the Summitar if it is slightly off, which may well be as it has undoubtedly worn a bit. Now if the CV helicals are off, which I suspect is the case, you will have to have those adjusted, which means they will have to be brought in spec. Which, again, CV will not do when confronted with a Leica camera. I suppose your best bet is to send the whole stuff off to somebody like DAG in the USA or Will van Manen in Europe or CRR in the UK and let him sort it.

I have seen something similar on my M8, with 35 Cron, 50 Lux and 75 Cron - all by the same amount when at the closest focusing distance.

I will do some more tests to verify.

focus shift

focus shift

I have similar problems, seems that each lens behaves differently after it clicks in the mount of the M8. I get a focus shift toward the rear of the distance scale on the lens, especially on the 50mm. The 35mm also has it but much less. Obviously it is invisible on the 21mm. I have learned to live with it, anyway, among the other little annoying things of the M8.
