... there finaly is the large size retrospective of his work (in German).

http://www.editionbraus.de/?id=187&aid=252

This book is beautifull printed and contains the best of Gypsies, Excils & Chaos ..... but also older work & newer landscapes.
I already owned Chaos & Excils but still found this a more than welcome addition.

Although i am not German myself i can think of a few.....
Andreas Gursky, the Bechers, Candida Hoefer, August Sander, Helmuth Newton, Werner Bischoff, Thomas Hoepker .... just the most famous that come to mind.

Robert Capa (aka Andrei Friedmann) was Hungarian.

I suppose all the other "great" photographers of that time never got the audience to become great in the eyes of the world.

Of course, there have been (and are) great photographers from all over the world since then.

J. Borger : thank you for the names, Ahh newton! how could I forget it, he was german jewish father - american mother living born in germany 🙂
kully : Indeed, I think I might have asked question in a wrong way, I just wanted to know classic german photographers..

BTW, IIRC the last time I looked I believe PhotoEye showed Chaos as Out of Print, and Amazon had it In Stock at a really good price. Koudelka fans may want to look into buying Chaos now before it too gets out of reach price-wise.

🙂

What about the blue-eyed girl of the late Adolf H, the late Leni Riefenstahl?

Is my memory playing tricks or did Koudelka spell his first name "Joszef"?

I can only agree .. Chaos is a fabulous book.
Although the retrospective has about 30 pictures of the Chaos book included ... they work very different due to differences in print-size.
The Retrospectice also includes about 10 Chaos-type images he recently shot in Rome & the Camargue that are of course not in the book Chaos... good stuff.
The price of Euro 59 is very reasonable for this type of books.

Werner Bischof was Swiss.

(And I'm not Swiss though located there)

"Josef" is right, Max, just as Josip Broz Tito was right. Devil knows in which muddled recess of memory I found the "z". Koudelka is usually described as a Frenchman born in Czechoslovakia.
