For Apple Aperture users

In case you missed it, Apple has just issued an update to Aperture's RAW support. The following cameras have been added:

Nikon COOLPIX P340
Nikon 1 V3
Olympus OM-D E-M10
Olympus STYLUS 1
Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GH4
Sony Alpha ILCE-7S
Sony Alpha ILCE-5000
Sony Alpha ILCE-6000
Sony Alpha SLT-A77 II
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 III

I have the Nikon 1 V3 and was upset when Apple announced they were ending their Aperture development activities. I love to use RAW and thought this meant I'd have to switch to Lightroom or Photoshop. But apparently they're still issuing some Aperture updates. I'm happy... at least for the time being until they drop Aperture and iPhoto for the new "Photos" software that's coming along with their new "Yosemite" version of OSX. 😱

The RAW engine is totally separate from Aperture and iPhoto, it's more of a system component that any app can use really, so it isn't really an Aperture update in that sense, even though Aperture and iPhoto makes use of it. I would guess it's very likely that the raw engine will be reused for their new Photos app in the future.

And to be honest, from what I've seen so far I am not that worried that Aperture is discontinued for the new Photos app. In my case I am actually quite happy, I think for me and my workflow, iCloud Photos is the best thing that will happen to me. And in 99% of the cases I use exposure controls, curves and retouch in Aperture, and I am willing to bet that they will all still exist in the Photos app.

At least I really hope so, because I find Lightroom to be one of the most horrendous applications ever known to man. 😉

I feel as you do about Lightroom, and Photoshop for that matter. I've enjoyed using Aperture since it first came out.

I'm curious about this iCloud stuff. What will it allow us to do? Is it simply an online storage media with the ability to access that storage via multilple devices? I'm kind of an old-school type, and trusting someone else to keep track of my image files makes me nervous. And I wonder how long it'll be before whoever holds the keys to the doorway to my images (Apple, Google... ?) will begin charging me for access. Any thoughts?
