For slow film, what are we left with?

I have been doing a little experimenting with various options. This is a recent shot taken with my Ansco Super Memar on CMS 20, developed in Adotech. I need to work with this film some more but I do think it has promise. I apologize for the dust spots, this was a quick scan and I really haven't had any time to fiddle with it.

As many have said, pick a film/ISO number/developer/time/temp./be happy.
The way film has always been used. Nothing new.

Thanks for the responses. Yeah, It didn't occur to me just to pull the film. I like Acros. Maybe I'll give that a go. Are there any specific benefits to using one developer over another for pull processing?

I slowly come to a realization that I like Delta 100.
I have seen in in 120 size, now I'd like to try it in 35mm.

If anyone would like to swap a couple 120 rolls of Delta 100 with your 35mm, contact me.

Found in my email box minutes ago. News from Freestyle Photo. Good news it is.

Dear Valued Freestyle Customer,
There are several new and exciting things happening at Freestyle right now, including some new films due in this month and some new products due early 2013.
With the closure of the Fotokemika factory in Croatia, we have received many calls and emails inquiring as to what choices are available for slow speed sheet film besides Ilford Pan F. Adox CMS 20 II will be available in sheet film sizes. In addition, Adox and Rollei are working on a new 25 ISO film available in all popular formats including 35mm, 120 and sheet film sizes. We will keep you updated as to the availability of these films.

Hopefully this news will come true.

Dear Chris,

Disputable, unless you underexpose and use funny developers.

Cheers,

R.

Not disputable, and not using funny developers, unless Rodinal and D-76 qualify as 'funny'. I've shot thousands of rolls of Tmax 100, and several hundred of Acros. I have used maybe 50 rolls of Pan-F Plus. Its nice film, but not as fine grained as Acros and TMX (though it does have nicer tonality than Acros).

I like slow film. Well, I guess just film slower than 100 iso or so. With Efke's demise, the pickings have slimmed. What do we have to choose from now? I like Pan F+, but what else is readily available? Slow and low that is the tempo.

Well, there is still quite a lot (and enough) to choose:

- Fuji Velvia 50

- Adox CMS 20 II
- Agfa Copex Rapid
- Ilford Pan F+
- Rollei Retro 80S (which is indeed an ISO 20-40 film considering the effective, real speed based on shadow detail; and depending on the developer used).

And probably we will see new Rollei Pan 25 / Adox Pan 25 and Rollei Ortho 25 next year. There have been information about that lately from very trustworthy sources. And Maco / Rollei-Film at Photokina this autumn confirmed that they are working intensively on new production with even better quality.

And you can always use TMX, Delta 100 and Acros with excellent results as ISO 50 films with developers like Perceptol, Rollei RLS, Spur HRX-3 New and Spur Acurol.

Cheers, Jan

This is great news. Rollei Ortho 25 is a wonderful film that I use quite a bit, far more than I ever used the Efke/Adox 25. I have a fair bit frozen, and am waiting for stock to become available. Had a student this semester discover the Efke 25 right before the machine broke. He was overjoyed with what he was getting on it. I bet he'd love the Pan 25.

The Rollei/Adox Pan 25 was very nice stuff when I could get it, I'd certainly give that a look again.

ORWO UN54 is a film I shoot at ISO 80, not really slower than 100, and it is certainly not a fine grained film in Rodinal. I do like it for the ability to get some gritty grain in full sun, but it seems like it would be a good candidate for exposing at 40 or 32, and running in Perceptol. I'm waiting on that to become available in 100' cans again...

Looks like macodirect.de still has APX-100 available in 135 for a good price. I've accumulated a couple hundred rolls in my freezer over the past few months. Even with shipping to the US, it is still a good deal if you order in bulk.

TMAX 100 is pretty hard to beat if you want superfine grain and useable speed.

I recommend Ilford FP4+ if you want a fine grained 'classic' looking film.

Haven't shot much Delta100 or Acros.

Are the CMS films still in production?

If you are looking for a film that offers 400asa speed and the grain of a traditional 100asa film you can't go wrong with Kodak TMY-2 400.

Bonehead question: are Agfapan 100 and Agfaphoto 100 the same stuff? Which is APX 100? I've never gotten this straight, and suspect I'm missing something.
