Former astronaut William Anders, who took iconic Earthrise photo, killed in Washington plane crash
William Anders was killed when the plane he was piloting alone plummeted into the waters off the San Juan Islands in Washington state.

Interesting backstory of how the image was captured and processed.

These men were a large part of the biggest inspirations of my young life, and why I wanted to work at NASA. I realized that dream with four years of work at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in the middle 1980s.
Nothing lasts forever, another hero gone. Time is cruel.
Godspeed, Bill Anders! 😢

I'm sorry to hear this, as others have said, inspiration for a generation.
Did I read somewhere that on the missions that landed on the moon they left their Hassleblad bodies behind in order to save weight? Or is this an urban myth?

Borman had a lot to do with improving the safety of the Apollo command module after the disastrous launchpad fire the year before. But Borman, Lovell and Anders were three brave men to do what they did.

No, it was reported and well known at the time. I think they should go back and get them, as long as another moon trip is planned! It might only take a short side trip!I'm sorry to hear this, as others have said, inspiration for a generation.

He sure is! Just don’t question the moon landing!!Buzz is still around!
72-year-old Buzz Aldrin punches a moon landing conspiracy theorist in the face | September 9, 2002 | HISTORY
On September 9, 2002, astronaut Buzz Aldrin—the second human to set foot on the moon—is walking outside a Beverly Hills hotel when a conspiracy theorist starts harassing him and accusing Aldrin of lying about the Apollo 11 moon landing. Incensed, Aldrin punches his heckler in the face. “You’re...

Yes, very quick reaction to get this, and then the discipline of so quickly knowing it was not colour. Frank Borman, commander, joked: “Don’t take that. It’s not in the schedule.” Quite amazing that a shot of Earth like this was not in the schedule. I’d have been kicking myself back home that I hadn’t realized this was ‘only black and white’, but it’s also an amazing shot. I have one or two colleagues who might have been in the astronaut league. They don’t make mistakes. This is really stunning!

Buzz was more than patient with the guy. He had no problem with the guy saying the moon landing was faked, but when he called Buzz a liar - boom-boom-boom, out go the lights. He sure is! Just don’t question the moon landing!!![]()
