I found this sweet nickel Summar for
my Leica II: No scratches but problem
haze. Sherry Krauter revived it nicely.
So I took it and my wife to Virginia
Beach to visit family and we shot a
roll while there. It was at sunset, so
I shot 1/500 at f/2 and the lens and
my wife did the rest:

I think I'll keep this one.

Great shots again! Wonderful how in the last shot your wife is perfectly exposed amidst the high key surroundings.
Not a virtue of the lens, but I like the sprocket holes!

What film/ developer?

This is Foma 200, exposed around EI 80 to 100.
I processed it in a 1:50 Rodinal solution for nine
minutes (68F).

Hat's off to Sherry Krauter for her work on the
Summar. I took it to Panorama here in NYC and
they wouldn't touch it -- said it was hopeless.
After Sherry finished with it, the lens looks new.

Thanks for sharing those. I learn something each time I view your pictures.

I like the look. I have a Summarit that has a lot of character as well-sometimes a bit too much!

very very nice work - i enjoy the look and feel, too

your wife is lovely and well complimented by your skill and choice of lens

Sanders,

These are lovely! There`s that Leica "Glow" from the 1930`s :D

I really need one of these for my work......I just bought a 37' Summar on another "Half Race" Leica, but it`s been sold already

What I`m really looking for is a late version of it (1939) and perhaps one that`s coated to use for my Retro Artistic Nude projects

Tom, I don't know if newer or older will make a difference
but I can tell you that coating the Summar will make a
big difference. I now have two Summars, both clear and
free of scratches. The three photos in this thread are
through the uncoated Summar on my II. For scans of
photographs shot through the coated Summar on my
IIIa, visit these older thread entries of mine:

In my very limited experience, I find that the coating
really tames the wild Summar. Whether that is a good
or a bad thing, depends entirely on the look you are
aiming to achieve in your photograph. Both of my
lenses are Summars, but they make very different
images.

Ahhhh that`s very very nice Sanders to see the difference of lens actions

I have NEVER used a Summar thoughout all my years of Leica fun, it was mostly 1950`s stuff I used before,
always shooting with Summitars, Summicrons and Elmars on a 1955/56 IIIF RDST and the oldest camera I put to the
test back then was a 1939 IIIa with an uncoated Summitar (my first Leica)

I`m wondering what would be the BEST? for that famed prewar Austrian Artsitic Nude style look
I don`t want it too washed out but also not razor sharp either and going for the best results "wide open" on a Tripod,
dark room lite up with floods, maybe I should do the "uncoated" lens first and see what it does for me and my style :)

thanks

Tom

I have a Summar on its way back home from cleaning and am eager to try it out. Its from the 30's, uncoated, and exhibited some "wildness" (great term!) when I first mounted it on a CL a few months ago. Personally, the "vintage" look is not what I'm after but the frames from the coated version you posted, Sanders, are what I would like to get from mine. Can't wait for the mail to arrive!

Hi Sanders,
In regards to aperture, do make any adjustments on your Summar? I just went through a few rolls and I'm having troubles getting consistently accurate exposures with it. Not a problem with other cameras I've had with me at the same time. It could be my shutter speeds are off. Just curious.
Very nice photos by the way!

Mike, no, I've not had any problems with exposure
with either of my Summars. but I am using traditional
B+W emulsions that are pretty forgiving of exposure
goofs, so I am probably not the right person to ask.

Sanders

Thanks Sanders, I'm using HP5 which is pretty forgiving, so I think I'll have my speeds checked.

I need to find myself a second Summar to try out... mine isn't 'wild' in the least, just really nice and sharp and produces some great results. It's even uncoated so I don't know what's missing... more scratches? :)
