Forum automatically marking unread as read

Is there a way to disable automatically marking all unread posts as read? I'd rather have them marked as read only when I read them or manually choose to mark them as read.

If I don't go through the site fast enough, everything gets marked as read automatically after a short amount of time. I often wait to visit RFF to check a PM or a thread until I have the time to read everything. I literally race through the lists of threads with new posts to load them into tabs. Sometimes I've loaded RFF's home page, waited a minutes, and found everything marked as read when I refresh the page a few minutes later.

I did some more research. Extending the cookie timeout limit to something huge might help prevent this weird behavior but it requires a change by an admin. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like vbulletin can be tweaked any other way to prevent this (referring to Question 1 at this vbulletin support thread...although it is almost 9 years old!)
