frame lines for wide angle lenses on M8

When you put a 35mm lens on an M8, two sets of frame lines appear in the viewfinder. The inner ones are for the 35mm (which I know is similar to the field of view of a 40mm lens).

What does the outer set of frame lines represent? Which lens would it go with?



I need a "good" wide angle lens for occasional use. The Voigtlander lenses provide a choice of 12, 15, 21, and up. Have people been pleased with the way they work on the M8?

Outer frames are for a 24mm lens. The Voigtlanders are excellent lenses and work well on the M8/M8.2. Just remember to use UV/IR filters and code the LTM adapters or get Milich adapters.

If those outer frame lines are for a 24mm lens, that would make it very convenient, but I keep thinking 21 might be more handy for what I do.

For those of you who get the Voigtlander lenses, do you get them direct from Cameraquest, or from dealers?

Lastly, the 15mm f/4.5 seems to be designed specifically for the M8. Anyone have one, and does it really work nicely on the M8? If so, which viewfinder are you using?

Probably best to get the newer, RF coupled 15mm Heliar to go on your M8.

The Voigtlander 21mm finder will probably serve you well, and you can buy both items from Camera Quest though you could try Robert White in the UK as well. Depends where you are..

I'm in the USA, and my choices seem to be CameraQuest or B&H.

I'll post something about my experiences with the M8 sometime soon - I've only been using it for a little over a week now, and I find it both very enjoyable to use, but also quite different from the way Nikon does things - I'm still trying to get used to the menu system.

With the 1.33 crop, a 15mm lens will have roughly a 20mm FOV.

I wear glasses and don't like to go wider than a 28 on my M8.2, since I don't like external viewfinders. Others, of course, have different opinions.

I'll be interested to see if the M9 will be full frame.

You might also consider The Photo Village in New York. I bought one (15mm/4.5) from them a couple of months ago and had no problems. If I remember correctly, they and CameraQuest are the only two authorized Voigtlander dealers in the US. This was however my only purchase from them so I can only provide a single data point as a satisfied customer and you should get additional opinions before making a purchase. Good luck. Mike

Anything wider then 24mm, which is roughly 32mm on the M8, requires an external finder, if so desired. For the 21mm, you would need a 28mm external viewfinder.
