I have now run 2 films through my new to me (bought refurbished from R&H) ZI. In both cases, one of the film's frames was only two-thirds advanced, resulting in two ruined pics. When it first happened I though I might have inadvertently touched the rewind release button. That was definitely not the case the second time. The same thing happened to me with my Oly XA that I bought a few weeks earier. With the XA I thought it was a result of camera wear. I have never had anything like this happen to me during 20 years of Oly OM shooting.

I am wondering if I am not careful enough when loading film on my new cameras, which have a different spool design than the OM. Maybe the leader is not inserted properly into the take-up spool. Or is a tendency to partially advance a frame a common defect on cameras that has appeared unexpectedly early on my ZI?

I think it's not (never or normally in common cameras) a take-up spool which give proper advance to film but two teethwheels before it. Always take a careful look to teeths properly fitting to film side holes before closing the backdoor (if unsure, use extra advance or/and tight film from left, from cassette side)

Or is a tendency to partially advance a frame a common defect on cameras that has appeared unexpectedly early on my ZI?

I cannot believe common. Never met during my 30 years experience.

What is? Perhaps you had closed camera door without proper film fit to teethweel and then during your filmroll happen ones a partly advance because film find its right place?
