Fred Herzog is a photographer I was not really clued up on but he had a similar aesthetic to Saul Leiter for whom I have great admiration. Which automatically makes me a fan. Apart from the beauty and nostalgia of his work I like the guys who buck the trends to do their own thing.

Yup, really like Fred Herzog. Him, Saul Leiter and Ernst Haas are probably my biggest inspirations at the moment.
 
I would say Saul Leiter bucked the trend completely... going color & abstract-isa on the street... but Fred Herzog didn't (except the early use of color). I love both though...

I too started with black and white - to me it was the only "real" photography in an artistic sense. But I was moved to shoot more and more in color when I discovered the opportunities for creativity it offered that black and white does not. (OK I realise it has its own virtues). I now always shoot in color (digitally) but when moved to do so will convert an image to black and white. This is normally done when the image "speaks to me" and tells me it "needs" to be in black and white. As a result though, perhaps 95% of my photography is now in color - I just prefer it. But I do carry out a lot of experimentation. Not to make my work look like Herzog'z or Leiter's or anyone else. But to find the best look for a given image.

Absolutely love hks work. Saw a display a few years back of large prints from Kodachrome of his photos in Vancouver. Saw him photographed more recently using a Fuji X20.
 
I was at his show in Vancouver before winter olympics. Probably most impressive color photogaphy I have seen, followed by later VM color photography with LTM Leica.
But I haven't seen other two big names for color yet. I have seen Meyerowitz LF color and Red book and wasn't impressed.

I think FH deserves to have his book purchased.
Even I was able to afford it not so long time ago.

I remember how some clueless person wrote (in the book, if I'm not mistaken) about him using Leica and went through typical Leica glorifying passage. I laughed because I knew truth about Herzog and Leica.
His bandaid man was taken with Nikkor 21mm (borrowed on this day) on his Nikon SLR...
