The FM forum does not accept free-provided emails (such as gmail, hotmail, etc.) when registering. It creates the impression that the FM is more secure. However, I have met (via purchases) respectable members in the RF forum. My question for all of you is: Do you feel better buying and selling at the FM forum or here? I am looking for something, but before I send money to the seller, I want to make sure I am not going to lose it. Thanks.

I registered for FM with either gmail or live.com (hotmail) about six months ago. Do they have a different registration for buying and selling?

I live under the impression that as long as you use Paypal, you're protected, whether you buy on FM or here. I know that that's true if you use Paypal on Ebay. If my impression is correct (I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong), it matters naught.

You're asking for a general assurance that you won't get taken in a sale. No one can give that to you, but generally speaking the folks who buy and sell in both places tend to be reputable. I've bought and sold on both forums without issue.

Never had a problem with buying / selling on RFF. I love the community here (99% of the time, anyway) and everyone looks out for each other. I can't say I know FM forums well at all, other than to check out reviews of lenses I'm looking at.

Only if you use your credit card to pay via Paypal you have a recourse. You have to request an invoice with a complete description of the item. If you send money as a gift, someone will love you for it. But you will not have any chance to do anything.

I've bought from both, never had a problem. I did once on Dyxum and got no help.

I bought many items from the Pentax Forums (also knew almost everybody). I also bought and sold on the Canon Forum. In the Canon forums someone tried to scam me when I posted a WTB post. They hijacked an Ebay account and provided as feedback. WHen i checked teh feedback with Ebay, they told me that that account had been hijacked recently. Cancelled the WTB reques. Then moved to Pentax and another Pentax member offer to sell the item. I checked again, and it was the same guy. So, scammers follow anyone throughout several forums.

I registered with a yahoo mail address on FM, nothing but good experiences buying and selling there.

RFF was the one for me that required a non-free email, which was a real pain because I needed to use my work email. I have bought here but not sold, again it was a great experience. If I am buying/selling digital gear I think of FM. Analog and I think of RFF.
