Bolivian Photographer of Che Guevara Fame Dies

Bolivian photographer of "Che" Guevara fame dies
Thu Aug 18, 2005 3:23 PM ET

LA PAZ, Bolivia (Reuters) - Bolivian photographer Freddy Alborta, famous for his image of revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara lying dead, has died in La Paz, his family said.

I seem to recall reading recently that he never got paid for that photo, which began showing up on t-shirts everywhere and has been popular for decades.

Sorry to hear that he's gone.

Best Regards,

Bill Mattocks

Bill,
don't you maybe mean Swiss photographer Rene Burri, who made the famous Che Guevara pic that's on all the t-shirts, who never got paid?
Alborta made another pic, that of the DEAD revolutionary (after he had been killed in Bolivia) - I have never seen that one on a t-shirt.

Yep, it was Korda, and he donated the photo so as to make it of public domain. I can't remember where I read the story but it was a real improvised shot during a civic act in Cuba, and Korda only realized about the impact of the photo when he printed it.

Bill,
OK, you can shoot me too! 😉

PS: To my defence - just browsed through that Taschen cheapo photo book about photographic icons of the 20th c. today - and they had this story about Burri meeting Che for an interview and shooting lots of pics. But of course, the famous one is by Korda...
