(Free) iPhone film development timer app

Hi!

@Chris101. Are you sure? :). Apple says the tests for iPhone and iPod Touch are identical. I don't have an iPod Touch to test. Can you PM me which version of iOS6?

@blw. I don't print, alas. I develop film all the time, I knew what I needed, I just don't know enough about how I could help printing. Safelight mode is easy (I would have not thought that you could get the right wavelength of red, but if MDC does it then apparently you can). But would that in itself be worth it? (It would still be a film timer, but with a safelight).

Thanks!

Ummm, maybe not so sure. I just now came back to this thread, sorry for not getting back to you. I just fired it up and it's working fine. I have 7 rolls of film to soup, so I'll give it a run soon.

I just wanted to mention that I have been using this app a lot, and after the upgrade that fixed the 1 minute problem it has been great!

This is on the Iphone 4 for me.

I almost forgot!

A new version (1.3) is out. There are a few teaks (you can double tap to go to next step, the alarm is shorter, a few bugs fixed). The new feature is that you can import recipes directly from FilmDev.org. (FilmDev.org is a great repository of recipes linked to their Flickr photos).

Can you make a shutter timer app?

I know a lot of people have older cameras with dodgy shutters. I don't know if the phone is fast enough to process that sort of thing.. idk.

Hey Todd. I grabbed the 1.3 update as soon as my pod told me it was out. I had a few rolls ready to go, so I just left my gralab timer on the shelf, and fired up your app.

While I am still finding the 'recipe' writing process a bit cumbersome, I found the application to be super easy-to-use once the authoring step was done. I ran 4 rolls through. In order to keep the chems off my device, I wrapped it in 'cling wrap' - worked like a charm. I truly dig your app!

Here's my one feature request: I slipped up with the fixer bottle after I started the Fix cycle. After30 sec or so, I paused the cycle, but to catch up, I had to count mentally, and then restart the timer. It would be nice to have a small button to restart a step.

Oh yeah, thanks again for the app!

Hi Chris,

I agree, I'm not at all happy with the recipe creation process, I've been duplicating an existing recipe and then tweaking it, but there must be a better way!

Small button to restart a step. Consider it done!

Thanks for your kind words,

Todd

It's very nice. However, I hope you can do the following changes:

. Change the direction of swipe indicator. The first time I ran it to develop the film, I could not swipe to the next step regardless how hard I tried! Then I had to use my old timer to finish the whole development cycle. After playing with the app for a while, I realized that I should have swiped to the left side instead of the right side, though the indicator is towards to the right side. This is very confusing considering that people usually slide to the right side to unlock the screen - the same direction as the indicator.

. Copy an existing formula and allow user to change based on it.

Hi,

i hope it's OK to post this, i think it's relevant to this forum. I finished an iPhone app that works as a development timer, just for fun, I couldn't find anything with a good interval timer to keep track of agitation. It's free, you can mail development recipes and post them to Facebook.

Happy to make changes and improvements if it's of use to anyone.

I took the lead from the Flickr and the built-in Photos app which is "swipe left to go to the next photo". Even though you unlock the phone with swipe to the right, I feel good about this. BUT you're right, the indicator is misleading. It shall be fixed! (And I'm glad you were able to figure it out!)

Copy an existing formula and allow user to change based on it.

You can do this! Apparently it's not clear. :(. Tap the share icon on the recipe screen and there is the option to "Dupicate"

Many many thanks for your comments, this really helps to improve things.

Thanks again! The new image for next version!

Thank you so much for your time programming and sharing this for FREE. I had another (paying) app for developing times and yours is much better indeed. And I'm glad it comes from a RFFer!

Yes, the dilution calculator would be really useful!!!

Keep the good job!

I've been using this for a couple months now and it's just great! As others have mentioned, authoring new recipes is a bit of a pain, but beyond that, the app is great!

Many thanks, great to hear and great start to the weekend!

Dilution calculator will be the next major feature. I'd love to find a way to make creating a recipe less of a pain as well, I have a few ideas.

@Chris, for "restart a step" I am changing the PAUSED screen (below, but the triangle needs to flip).

Those two changes (restart a step, switch direction of arrow) will be out in a couple of weeks.
