French photographer Willy Ronis dies at 99

Wow, I guess at 99 not unexpected, Willy was one of my favorites, his photos were always full of the warmth and humanity of his subjects. A truly great photographer.

I really like Willy Ronis' photographs. I am glad I bought a good book of his photographs a few years ago. It's too bad that time marches on so relentlessly. So many of the great photographers from the '40s and 50's are dying. Obviously it is inevitable, but still sad.

One of his images is one of the first classic postcards I bought in Europe, 20 years ago, great stuff, really great images that remain in the mind.

Regards, John

Ah, yes, I saw this in the NYT's. I'm sorry to see him go, but we all must at some point. I'm happy he left us with such wonderful work.

I was just telling my friend about him the other day on the way to the city. I was telling him about the famous photo he has of the little boy carrying the roll of bread through the streets. Then, as we walked into the first cafe in the city, there on the wall was a large print of this photo! Crazy stuff.

Yes here was a nice guy who was unknown to most of the world, and his favorite thing about his work was that he "never took a mean photo". Never shot a photo that made anyone look bad or stupid ! And went out of his way to hold off shooting one if he had the chance ! Wow...he will be missed. Nice write up in the NY Times about his passing.

This makes me very very sad, but he was 99!! My all time favourite photographer.:( Also a fellow Focaiste
