Great photo Chris. I love the little homemade signs of Americana.

I had a fried peach pie from (I think) a Piggly Wiggly back about 5 years ago after I got out of the Navy and it was awesome.

Back out in New Mexico we had the "Indian Fry bread" signs and then the stands at highway off ramps. Those are also great but slightly greasy, hot, heavy fried dough isn't something that should be eaten on a road trip across the southwest without a large supply of something to wash it down. Last time I had some fry bread I was praying for the skies to rain milk. I stopped in Winslow, Arizona and bought a pint carton of milk and a gallon of ice cold water.

Makes me want to head out west now...

Yes, here in Dallas/Fort Worth, fried pies are plentiful and really good.

You have to eat them sparingly, though, or they'll kill you deader than a doorknob, what with all the grease clogging up the arteries in the heart and/or the calories adding multiple pounds.

It must be a Texas thing - I have cooked literally thousands of hand made fried pies at our annual rodeo. Apricot is the best...

They probably should be served with a Surgeon General's health warning; or at least a free consultation with a cardiologist.

I hesitate to ask, knowing something of American culinary excursions, but what on earth is a "Fried Pie"?

We Australians have to be careful what we say because as strange as the concept of a fried pie may be to us we have a concotion called the 'pie floater!'

It makes the 'fried pie' seem quite normal frankly! 😱

Well, now it starts to make some sense. The descriptions offered in various posts here sounded nigh on disgusting, at least if you want to retain your girlish figure, but Dave's illustration looks just like the apple pies that McD's offer on their Australian menu. They're not so bad, but the outer casing is so full of fat from the frying that I don't often have one.
Never seen or tried the other varieties that people keep mentioning, like sweet potato, even though we do have that vegetable here.

Lukewarm? Usually hot, if not make a change. Casing? They have no casings and the buns are just okay.

Probably what you are missing is they are best with chili, onions and a lot of mustard. Onion Rings (or fries) on the side. Coke or Chocolate drink. And of course a fried pie!

Not everyone likes them depending on their culinary background but millions do every year.:angel:

Thanks, Dave -- maybe I came at the wrong time of day -- it was deserted, and I certainly did not load them up. Didn't have no fried pie, neither.

Nice to have a food-related trend after the strudel one with Ruben -- after all, without food there would not be any photographers.
