I've been on Hewlett-Packard's mailing list for a little while now (buy one product and you're "friends for life"), and most of the mailings, particularly for digital cameras, tend to be a snore. But this feature on their newest little number got me out of my chair:

http://tinyurl.com/ytcwwz

Now, the "feature" itself isn't all that extraordinary: anyone with an angstrom of talent with Photoshop has been able to do this for years, and Dog knows how many magazine cover-models have been the recipient of this "gift". But, up until now, the humble ol' happy-snap could be trusted to offer an approximation of what passes for photographic "truth", since what came straight out of the camera, save for red-eye, presumably couldn't be easily tampered with. Not anymore, baby. (This should be a hit with the "reluctantly-single" market).

Yours for Truthiness,

- Barrett

Creepy video example. Of course for it not to be glaringly obvious when used on me, all of the laws of physics would also have to be re-written. How about a feature that lowers blood-pressure and cholesterol?

They try the craziest things to get the "edge" over their competitors in the eyes of the consumer.

Are there really people who'd buy a camera because it has this feature?

Check out this sumo wrestler! He is so thin!

I actually find myself wondering about the models in the ad's photoshoot - chosen specifically to make an "after" version of their natural "before" appearance.

That kind of thing always makes me laugh. And so does this kind of product - "What, Americans are obese? Nonsense, this photo proves you are incorrect. Nothing to see here, move along..."

Cheers,

The same people who buy cars with heated cup holders.

My Pentax K110d does this but its hidden in the menus and they wouldn't be so dumb as to advertise this "feature." Point being I think its more common that most would think.
