Reagan and Jan, I actually think it's a nice theme and I'd be up for it, just keep the Tsjernobil-reference out of it and it's all fine. Urban archeology is good for me!

As much as I appreiciate it, Jan gave the theme a lot more thought than I did when I brought it up. I was in no way even serious about any of the themes in that post, but posted, as I said, unthinking and totally tongue-in-cheek. (I was quite shocked when replies were, "Hey! Good idea.")

It was a lame joke and as you said, a bad one. I was thinking more of the abandoned buildings/failed enterprise/ghost town, etc. and never thought about the devistation to human lives, both then and now. I should have. I'm really glad you brought it up. I'm in no way offended by your remarks and I sincerely thank you for stepping up and saying, "Hold it. Let's think about this."

Jan is right as well [as usual... ;) ]. A theme capturing "urban archeology," as he well states it, would be great. But for sure, don't ask ME to name it!! :(

Hey wait! I just thought of another theme! Ready? How 'bout... "Goofy-looking Photogs with FOOT-IN-MOUTH!" Here's the first entry!

here’s another tentative suggestion: only people from the former eastern block or people that live in eastern europe, respectively are permitted to partake … haha, talk about a »restricted« contest. :p :D

anyway, i am absolutely for such a thing to start rolling (film * drum * roll). the only rules should be related to rangefinder cameras and corresponding lenses being of soviet manufacture. a theme would be helpful, but then again, we find internationalist unity in progressive diversity, too. :)

i am fine with both, anyway. поздрав из хрватске.

Since I just acquired a Kiev 4AM with Helios lens I meet the first qualification!

So I'm interested - provided it's for fun and has some kind of "subject" but not "street".

Besides it's the only way I can stick around to see if nzeeman's pig finally pulls its ear off! :D

WEll, I am in. Just have to decide what camera to use, my Zorki 4 with J-8 or J-12 or my Kiev IIIA with J-8. My Moskva 2 is a rangefinder, so it qualifies.

Pity I couldn't use my FS 122 or my Zenit TTL. I also need an excuse to test my Lubitel as well.

Count me in as well. A good chance to use the old FED NKVD or Zorki C.

GOOD NEWS!
Jorge said its ok to make FSU contest but we have to wait until HCB contest is finished.
so next month we are starting. now we just have to choose theme and decide how we will vote for winner. i would not like to be like in HCB-to choose 10 best pics by a jury. I want all pics to be in competition, we just need to find some way. Maybe every competitor could send email to me and other members with points for best 10 photos by his opinion (1st photo=12 points, 2nd=10, 3rd=8,4th=7,5th=6,6th=5,7th=4,8th=3,9th=2and 10th=1point)
then we will summarize all and choose winner.
what do you think?

...atlichna!!

...sounds like fun.

...this will finally get me to load up my shkolnik i bought months ago.

...so what are the guide lines/parameters/criteria/ etc ?

...when does the fun begin?

hasta la vista, adieu, dasvidanya,,fino al prossimo tempo, auf wiedersehen, and later y’all

Is it reasonable to ask that only the lens should be of Russian origin, i.e. to allow for example Leica or Bessa + Jupiter
combinations ?

Thanks,

Roland.
I believe the general consensis was no. Full FSU all the way.
It's a long thread and it is likely that you missed it.

If you want to borrow a FSU body for the competition I have a Fed 2L I could lend someone.

what do you think?

I think the idea for judging is unreal. It is too unweildy to carry out. Perhaps let each member choose his top photo, one photo per member. Why do you need 10 best photos, all you need is first place, second place, and third place. Also the idea of each person mailing every other person in the contest and sending his top 10 choices is terrible. I don't want everyone to know how I voted and I don't want to contribute to spam by carrying this out. I think you are trying to make this thing too complex, lighten up. If you don't want to be responsible get someone else who isn't afraid to make rules and a way to pick the photos. I also wouldn't want a theme. That makes it too restrictive and might prevent some people from entering. I prefer shooting what I want to shoot, not what someone dictates. Also the themes mentioned are so mundane. Just let us shoot whatever we want and be judged on the merits of the photo and not on whether it fits in the theme. I quit entering our camera club's monthly show because they decided to have a theme for every meeting. I'm with jckline, only restriction should be equipment.

I agree that the 10 photo idea is a little clumsy. But if we only picked one photo, it might cause confusion about the second and third place winners. Perhaps if we just sent our top X number of picks to some head judge (judges?), who could do the tallying. Just an idea. This would make the scoring more private, and not have everyone know who voted how.

We're talking FSU here, right?

I suggest that we agree that each participant submit only ONE entry.

We ask Jorge to set up a separate Gallery section for the FSU "contest" where those pics are posted.

Then....we just admire them and make non-judgemental comments etc. as we see fit.

After all we are a collective in which there no need for individual competetion - just an expression of product for the common good!

copake and drako are right. my idea is complicated and this is fun contest. lets make it easy-in galleries we have option to rate a photo. everyone can rate hotos and photo with biggest average is winner. is that good?

We don't need to rate every photo. Post the photos in a gallery and have everyone select one photo they like most. You could set up a poll and have each person vote for one photo on the poll and then count the votes for each. KISS is the rule. That's how it was done on another forum I joined. And I agree that number of entries per person should be limited to one.

How about putting one entry per photog in the gallery, then voting by posting a comment "I vote for this one" under the one you like. Then, comments could be made on variable photos without voting FOR that particular pic. Only count the "I vote here" comments. After x amount of days, tally up the "I vote here" comments and give the winner a million bucks. Simple. Maybe?

edit: P.S. ~ the "groups of ten" idea is okay with me too.

I agree with this.

I still like the idea of a theme, even a loose one. A theme gives focus to the participants and the final judging. I think a theme creates a challenge and will get people out shooting more (which is what it's all about), rather than just choosing an FSU shot they may have taken a year ago.

one could require that the picture has to be current and taken particularly for the contest -- theme wise ... "the reality of my surroundings," you can include pretty much everything there.
