Thanks for your reply. I will try a friend's Summitar today, and in the meantime I also followed Brian's suggestions for registering the J-8 I found in a photo.net thread
The variable standoff ring on my J-8 was almost completely screwed in already, but I managed to move it about 1/8 of a turn. Hopefully the J-8 is now in focus, will take a couple of test shots with it too.
I also discovered my IVsb is in fact a IIF, as it lacks 1/1000.
The lens has a variable-standoff ring that can be used to adjust this focus. Unscrew the optics module from the focus mount. No set screws, it just comes out. You will see the shim(s) sitting on the variable standoff ring. You can undo the set screw of the variable shim to do a fine adjustment. Usually, 1/2~1/4 turn does the trick. Unscrew the standoff ring if the focus is behind what the RF indicates, screw it in if the focus was too close.
