How well do these different Nikon/ Nikkor models compare for damping?
Mirror damping isn't a strength of the Nikkormat line. At least not of the FTn. There's a distinct operating sound -- "KLAL-lop!" -- that doesn't speak of fine mechanical control.
But overall, Nikkormats have an old school feel that the FM/FE line lacks. They are tough as nails.
And the extra top-mounted match-needle for the light meter is useful and unique.
Nikkormats came in chrome and black. The black ones are relatively rare but kind of improbably cool.

The mirror damping has been different on the different FTN examples I've handled - those available locally were smoother and quieter (but in rougher condition). My own is in better condition but the damping is poorer, sort of like a refined Praktica in a nicer body.. needs new light seals so it can probably be smoothed when the seals are sorted.
The meter seems to work fine.. still awaiting the normal lens - Erik's FTN 50 f2 lens post convinced me that's the lens to get.
