Why New F2 Design for 23mm

Why New F2 Design for 23mm

The single most important reason for the new 23mm F2 design is clearly visible. When you look at the cross section of the optical design. These lenses are going to produce a totally different visual "thumbprint". The new design is really targeted towards better resolution of fine details, with resorting to using high contrast charteristic like is so common in many new generation digital designs. Also this should have a much better BOKE. In terms of misting or melting progressively in front or behind the chosen focus point.

I would suggest looking at the comparion diagrams from the new Fuji lenses Catagory for X-series lenses.

You can find the diagram I posted at Twitter...user name Dantedmoney

The need for this lens is to offer a different "personality" than the F1.4
Which is excellent.....this just a better design for micro details and also costs less. But again it's just offering more creative options. Lower cost does not mean less quality. I'm waiting on a sample for testing.

I will certainly buy it. Even at the price asked, it fits a needed niche in my lineup that the 23/1.4 was too large to do well (and that no rangefinder lenses have been able to do at a price I can deal with).

if it is the same lens in X100/S/T I may buy it, in case it also performs equally well.
I love how it draws on those cameras and I have an X-E1

I do not plan on buying the 35mm f/2 Fuji lens for the following reasons:

1. The angle-of-view of a 35mm on an APS Fuji X body (or 50mm on a full frame body) has never been a favorite of mine.

2. For my shooting style, I prefer the 28mm focal length to 35mm.

3. For my shooting style, I prefer the 23mm focal length to 35mm or 28mm.

4. I value lens speed more than I value a small lens size.

5. I prefer a faster f/1.4 lens rather than the slower f/2 lens.

6. I can use the 35mm focal length on my 16-55mm f/2.8 Fuji zoom if I need that focal length.

7. I can use my adapted 35mm f/1.4 or 35mm f/2 Nikon lenses if I need that focal length.

Wrong thread?

fuji 23/2...who's gonna buy it?

I will not because:

1. I prefer a faster f/1.4 lens rather than a slower f/2 lens.

2. I value lens speed more than I value small lens size.

3. I own the 23 f/1.4 and love it. It was the first lens I purchased for my X-Pro1.

Early tests show it performs much better than the x100 lens, which I would hope to be the case. I rarely shoot the x100T below f4 because of how soft it gets. Apart from weather sealing, a redesigned/sharper lens is my biggest 'want' out of the next gen x100

if it is the same lens in X100/S/T I may buy it, in case it also performs equally well.
I love how it draws on those cameras and I have an X-E1

As above. I would certainly hope it's better. The X100's are a nice package, I've had all three. While the lens get's the job done, it's compromised below f4. My 23/1.4 is a better lens than the X100's 23. Expected yes, but it does not take 100% and pixel peeping to see the difference. The 23/1.4 is also more adaptable for close shots and low light.

If it is the same lens from the X100 series I definitely will NOT buy it! The flare issues are too serious even with the hood. Otherwise, probably will, even though I have the 1.4. Just for the size.

Tests? Who has tested it? Can you post links?

The test wasn't the x100 vs the 23 f2, but rather the 23 f2 vs the 23 f1.4
https://ivanjoshualoh.com/2016/08/25/23mm-vs-23mm-sibling-rivalry/

If you wanted to take that a step further you could compare the 23 f1.4 vs the x100 and draw your conclusions between the 23 f2 and x100
http://www.fujivsfuji.com/x100-s-t-vs-23mm-f1pt4/

Regardless, the 23 f2 appears to be much sharper than the x100 in every early hands-on test I've read thus far. Which, again, is absolutely zero surprise. Not sure why anyone would buy the 23 f2 if it only performed as well as the x100. If you already have an x100 (like many of us do), you'd want a better quality lens. Otherwise, there's no reason to buy a new lens.

I already have the XF18mm and XF35 WR but I wanted to get one in-between.
My choices were
XF23 WR
XF27 2.8
XF 24 8
Voigtlander Skopar 25mm

The Skopar would be great as I could use it on the M3 and Fuji X body and it's still something that I would really like, however I bought a Fuji 27mm this morning at The Camera Store as it was on 20% off and $50 mail in rebate from Fuji.
This lens is very tiny and light, not a big fan of no aperture dial but it;s something I can live with.

The price is a bit steep, but I am sorely tempted. Maybe I'll end up with a used X100 of some description instead, though?
