Fuji 50mm f1.0 - they're calling it THE ONE

Here's something I wasn't expecting at all. Fuji have just announced a 50mm f1.0 portrait lens. Looks quite juicy.

This gives a remarkable new tool to Fuji X shooters, and entice those who aren't in the system.

As for me, it tingles my gear senses, but it also makes me think of something else. The only equivalent lens elsewhere is the Voigtlander Nokton 75mm f1.5. And the Leica Summilux 75mm f1.4. I'd be interested to see a head to head comparison of these lenses, but that is unlikely to happen.
 
50mm is nice length on apsc, but least I’ve been needing second body with a wider option. Been using Sony 50/1.8 and 20/2.8
 
I was reading that while designing the lens they purposely left some spherical aberrations under corrected in the optical design so it would have a softer bokeh and more character. From a lot of the samples online so far, it looks like they succeeded. Very different rendering to the 56mm f1.2.
 
The Nokton and Summilux I don't think are equivalent, may have the same fov and roughly speed but they are not autofocus.

From the images I have seen with this and the 56mm I prefer the look and colours of the 56, especially skin tones.

The fuji lens line up is fantastic, have some posh glass with the 50mm f1 and 200mm F2 and then user lenses are priced well.

There is something under corrected and still the size is huge :/ I prefer Chinese approach with tiny lenses with no sharp corners because to me point of mirrorless is to have small package and not making it size of dSLR. I would even get 7art 35/1.2 any day, with all its flaws but still compact and also more useful focal length, even if prices are much closer...

To be fair, Fuji specialises in tiny lenses that are highly corrected. This lens is a specialty lens for them, not the norm.
 
Does this lens have a concave front element? Very Ultron-like!

Fujifilm chose to control the spherical abberation in the foreground/subject focusplane with the 1 ASPH element, but leave some of the spherical abberation in the background, instead having that portion controlled/handled by the ED elements near the front of the lens.

Is that even possible? Controlling spherical aberration in front of the focal plane separately from spherical aberration behind the focal plane?

i have 35/2 and its bigger than any chinese lenses (ok i know its because af probably) but damn without correction that lens is most undercorrected thing i ever saw... i still feel awkward to take photos with it when i know how much adjustment camera does on it. somehow that process make me estranged from whole photography process. but i love their bodies!
 
Reasons why I won’t be buying the Fujinon 50mm f1.0 lens

1. I have the Fujinon XF 50mm f2 R WR lens and it does everything I need from a 50mm lens.

2. I have the Fujinon XF 56mm f1.2 R lens and it does everything I need from a fast lens.

3. It’s just a bit too big to use on my X-Pro3. The same could be said of the 56mm f1.2 R lens but that’s already bought and paid for.

4. Lastly, the most important reason is that I ain’t got no money! My recent jump into the Medium Format world with the Fujifilm GFX 50R with 45mm & 63mm lens has left me fresh out of extra pocket money for a while. Sad but true. 🙁

Indeed it does happen, and almost always. Briefly, if a lens is neither over- nor under-corrected for spherical aberration, the bokeh disk in out of focus detail (such as specular reflections) will have an even illumination across the circle, neither brighter around the periphery nor brighter toward the center. If the spherical aberration is under-corrected, then the disk is brighter toward the center and the periphery is less so and this promotes more attractive (smoother) bokeh... but *only* for the far bokeh, that beyond the focus point. At the same time, the near-bokeh will have the disks brighter around the edge and so produce less-attractive soap-bubble bokeh. This is usually acceptable unless the OOF near-bokeh is very noticeable. The very opposite occurs with a lens over-corrected for SA.

Okay fair about the correction, but it's still a tiny lens. The only Chinese lenses that are significantly smaller and faster have legitimately crap IQ comparatively. No other mirrorless AF brand has a smaller 50, or a smaller range of primes. I have owned both the xf 35 1.4 and f2, I personally prefer the 35 f2. While it's true it has software corrections (and usually I'd be skeptical of such a thing), the IQ on that lens is bonkers good. Almost Zeiss like.
 
but anyway its 4% of barrel distortion and almost 2 stops of vignetting.. its totally same as any chinese - only advantage are sharper corners-but i rarely put anything in corners... i need af occasionally and that is only reason i still keep it...
 
Just out of curiosity, is this thread going to be an endless back and forth of Fujinon lenses versus Chinese lenses? I don’t think that’s what this thread was intended to be about but if so, well, whatever.

Well to be honest, You can get the Sigma 56mm 1.4 for Sony. It’s pretty small, but I get your point.

As far as my thoughts, I have the 50mm F2 and the 56mm 1.2. I’m good in this area. I’m also thinking the GFX-50R and the 50mm 3.5 is my next buy...I have enough Fuji X gear.
