So has the Fuji RAW conversion kerfuffle settled down? Is LR4 "there" imn terms of what it can do? Have the masses migrated to CaptureOne? I am planning some summer travel and planning to take the M9 and X1-Pro. But it would be helpful to hear others' recent experiences with Fuji RAW files.

Ben, do you use Apple Aperture? It does really nice RAW conversions from X-Trans sensors. Of course, Apple took their sweet time getting it figured out!

Ben,
LR4 seems to be just fine for the most part - I had posted some custom colour profiles here in the Fuji X forum which everyone can download and import into LR to assist with the RAW conversion from the X cameras.

Cheers,
Dave

does apple (aperture) have a trial version available?

As far as I know, both Aperture and iPhoto convert RAW files at the OS level (which is why RAW support is delivered through Software Update). You should be able to open up a Fuji RAF file in Preview, save it as a 16 bit TIFF, then open it up in Photoshop to see if you are happy with the conversion. That way, you don't have to completely change your asset management platform in order to process certain files differently (unless you really do want to switch over to Aperture).

I don't think they have a demo to download.

However, if u are close to an Apple, u can go into an apple store w/ a couple of raw shots and play w/ aperture there. Just find someone and say u are interested in buying it. They have it on a lot of their machines.

Hi Dave,

Can you tell me what you called the thread please. just trawled the Fuji forum and must have completely overlooked it, I'd love to import them and give them a try.

Thanks

LR 4.4 and 5.0 are fine. From reading lots of posts it seems all the major platforms do a decent job. Not unlike non-XTrans raw files, each has advantages and disadvantages. Some photographers prefer one over another.

I find LR's current rendering acceptable. I will tell you that if you use the default parameters you will not get the best results. Particularly sharpening, and clarity require different approaches compared to the X100 and NEF raw. This is to be expected as there is no AA filter and the demosaicing algorithms are completely different.

A fair criticism of XTrans cameras is with ACR you may need to adjust to new parameter optimization techniques and you may also find more variability parameters with different types of images. Even if you come up with an initial parameter set that works well most of the time, you will find some images require further adjustments compared to Bayer raw files.

I have no idea if other programs also benefit from different techniques or if you can set and forget basic parameters and expect to get the best from every image.

I prefer the Capture One conversions to LR4/ACR but only by a little. Not by enough that I've purchased C1.

I think the pro pricing is a good deal too. I don't think I'm willing to put in the effort necessary to jump ship from lightroom though... It is tempting all the same.

c1's file system is totally different from LR. in the end, i've got a bunch of photos organized in a way that i like and i really didn't want to learn another workflow. LR4.4 is as good as C1 was (during my trial period). some things C1 did better but it sure wasn't everything.
