Has anyone used Fuji 400H or 800Z with a ND filter? If so what were your results? Did it change color characteristics of the film? I have not worked with ND filters on color and am going to need to use a factor 4 in my next project. I don’t want the outside with filter on to look way different than the inside stuff without it. Suggestions other than 800Z for inside and 160C for outside? I need those IE’s but with one film. 🙂

Is the theory not that ND filters affect only the amount of light, not its colour? Hence neutral density?

Communism sounds good in “theory” also but the question still stands. Can anyone speak to real world results? On the film that is.

never used it with colour but they work just fine with b&w.

thanks joe- i have not had problems with BW either no contrast change etc nor with C41 BW. I guess i just need to rollum and see.

This is not so much dependent on the film as it is on the filter. Some makes have a decided cast while others don't have that. Cokin ND and ND-grads are notorious for not being entirely neutral.

But even a completely neutral filter won't get you colour consistency between inside and outdoors. The colour temperature outdoors is heavily dictated by the sky, which isn't the case inside or in the shade. And this is even without indoor lighting (incandescent/fluorescent) considered.

Still, if you're using colour negative film, the printing process allows much room for correction. My personal favourite is Fuji NPH for both indoors and outside, because it's a film that labs are able to produce very consistent results with.

I highly doubt that you'll get a colour cast, especially if you use a high-quality filter. But Peter's statement above, that's the answer to any problems you might have.

ISO800 with x4 ND? Why not just get slower film?
