Is that close enough for a portrait with 90mm lens? I mostly ask because the Mamiya 7 appeals to me very much but portraits are impossible with it.

The smallest distance on the lens is just under 1 meter.
I took this portrait of my sister with a Fujica GW690, Ilford HP5, and a green filter. It was the first picture I took with the camera when I got it.

It's not bad, but it's not great. Consider that the 90mm on a 6x9 negative is similar to a 35mm on a 35mm camera. Ideally you could get .7m or closer, but it suffices for head / shoulder portraits. Here's a recent example shot around 1 - 1.3 meters:
