Fuji to introduce 3D digicam

In a bid to beat fierce competition and to turn around its loss-making digital camera operations, Fujifilm plans to launch a new model capable of capturing 3-D images in August.

The new machine, which comes with two lenses and two image sensor chips to make 3-D pictures possible, will likely sell for about 60,000 yen ($641) in Japan, a Fujifilm spokeswoman said.

Interesting... I'm sure as 3D technology in general (mainly displays) advances, we'll surely see more and more of these. Then again, 3D cameras never really caught on.

It may have been that the technology just wasn't ready - it remains to be seen if the technology is ready now.

Well, stereoscopic photography was wildly popular in the late 19th century. I'm not sure if it'll catch on - but I think in the fiercely competitive digitcam market you really have to distinguish yourself as something new and different, especially now.

Looks quite cool. I wonder how much printing the pictures is going to cost?
Do like the idea of a digital picture frame to show your 3D pics, that could be popular.
But 3D has always been something of a novelty, never quite mainstream.

I wonder how the 3D image will be viewed? I did some shots on an old Viewmaster camera, which also has 2 lenses, and made them into an animated GIF file.

So digital cameras make losses? They still have too long life cycle.

I like Fuji doing something new. They started high ISO wave in digicam market, I don't count face detection as big deal, though majors again followed them. Finally, they decided to continue production of 800Z after they first announced retirement of product. Fuji is great company, what to say.

Hope they will keep thy customers.
