The recent political climate is certainly a factor in Korea’s decision. Still, the side affects are well known in Japan and many people I speak with here would prefer to avoid taking Avigan given the choice.

A French researcher has shown good results with Hydroxychloroquine and others have also had similar good results with it against the virus.

hmmmm.

VSF is a protein that stimulates immune responses (a cytokine) and has been available for quite some time. It is, unfortunately, also highly immunogenic, and not in a good way - it stimulates antiviral response but a lot of patients are also allergic to, or mount a strong response to the product itself.

Favipiravir is not a novel drug, it is part of a large family of products with antiviral activity that are pyrazinecarboxamide derivatives.

Favipiravir is better tolerated than interferon α or ribavirin, but if you are a candidate for these types of treatment non-target effects are probably the least of your concerns.

It is more likely that the main concerns are about maintaining efficacy and emergence of viral variants with decreased susceptibility during monotherapy. In 2014 it was approved in Japan for use against viral strains that are unresponsive to other registered antivirals.

At any one time pharmaceutical companies (which Fujifilm is one of, whatever it is called) have hundreds or thousands of products marked as candidates, under trial, and at various steps in the proof of concept and registration processes. The vast majority never make it to market for one reason or another. Viruses are very complicated little packets of nucleic acid, and their replication and pathology varies greatly even within closely related groups. A product that works against one virus may not work at all against another, even if the two viruses are of a similar type (e.g. this is a positive sense single-stranded RNA virus) or family (in this case Coronaviridae).
