Fuji Velvia 50

Fuji discontinued Velvia 50. I'm thinking of stocking my freezer with some 35mm and 120 Velvia 50 while I can still get fresh stock. How good is this film? I have seen examples in magazines & I liked what I saw. Is the new Velvia 100 as good? Not quite as good? Can't tell the two apart?

I can get a 20 roll propack 135-36 for $131.00 and a 5 roll propack of 120 for $24.00. Are those decent prices?

Assuming the newer Velvia 100 yields similar results, I'm sure you are correct. That's why I would like to hear from anyone who has used both the old 50 and the neww 100 Velvia.

The Vlevia 50 is quite a bit cheaper than the 100 right now.

One more question: Assuming the film goes straight in the freezer, how long can I expect to get quality results from the film? If I don't shoot it before it expires, am I asking for trouble say in the first year after expiration?

I used both.the 100 rvp is better 🙂
has more latitude,better reds(not as overblown) and a more usable 100 iso speed

I´ve bought 3 Rolls of Velvia50 expired 1998 two weeks ago....to my surprise the first roll worked out quite well, a little underexposed (next time I´ll go for 32 or 25asa) and with a purple cast (because of underexp.?) but no problem if youre scanning them

I´ve used Velvia 50 as well as Velvia100 in the last few months but shot only few rolls with them. imho the new velvia 100 has colors more balanced and Velvia 50 oversaturates red a little (so skin looks more purple)..but both give so strong colors that I´m not able to scan them as briliant as the slides are! also shadows are tough to scan with my DS

the first is with V50 second/third V50 expired and last with V100

I have been using Velvia 50 for many years now, and I find it unique for certain applications. I reecntly used it with a Zeiss 5cm/2 lens during a sunset to get some very nice colors of the water. I am not so sure that it is a question of Velvia 50 vs. Velvia 100 but rather to use both.

I agree with you for someone with a good deal of experience shooting Velvia 50 such as yourself, but the poster does not have any experience with it. I think all in all it is better to get used to a film that will be available in the long term than have to switch after only a short while. For someone experienced using both would be the way to go.

OK, OK! Reason and good common sense prevail. Even though the Velvia 50 costs less now, once hooked I would have to go cold turkey in a year or two. 😱 😀

I reckon I will learn to use and love Fuji Velvia and Provia 100 for my 120/220 format needs. Kodachrome 64 for my 35mm needs.

Velvia 50 is only any good for particular applications such as nature or landscape, in which it excels. It is particularly useless for portraiture unless you want your subject to look like they're in the last stages of alcoholism. It is also very contrasty, less forgiving than provia or any of the ektachrome 50 or 100 emulsions. So unless you're a specialist buy something else

How long will the film render accurate colors after it's expiration date? If I were to buy a 20 roll pack of Velvia 50 and keep it in the freezer, it might be around for years. I would only use it on special occasions. Does anyone have experience with the image quality of out of date Velvia 50?

expired 1998 - no problems in terms of accuracy. Certainly quite saturated so it's hard to say it was totally natural, but no color shifts. Bought directly from Freestyle so it was refrigerated for that whole time.

I have used slide film ten years beyond its expiration date. There is a slight observable difference, but with the advent of PS, this effect is nearly insignificant for nature photography.

Let`s hope it`s close to the original.
