Fuji x100 street examples!

A friend recently checked out the X100 prototype at a photography show in Las Vegas. The dealbreaker, he said, was that, after shooting a picture with the optical viewfinder, the camera left an image of the shot in the OVF, releasable only by pressing the shutter button halfway down again.

This greatly impacts street shooting because it impedes a possible second shot immediately after the first. Unfortunately, the Fuji techs were not able to override this very disagreeable feature via the software.

This was supposed to be a simple, basic retro-style quality digital camera. Why mess it up with stupid gimmicks like this?

Are you saying that after you take a shot with the OVF, it automatically switches to the EVF and you can't override it? Surely that can be changed in firmware.

As clarified by Andy on Dpreview, it is fixed in the latest firmware.
Sorry too lazy to provide a link.

"I do not care if the camera has interchangeable lenses, bulletproof, idiot proof, fastest focus, great IQ (I just learned of this term today), etc. Rather I will think of how to move to the right place at the right time, at the right angle, at the right exposure setting, at the right composition and at the effect that I want.

I deliberate leave out mentioning the weakness of the camera. The greatest weakness is the photographer himself, including myself. That’s why the best photo of mine is always the one in the future."

....?

The OVF/EVF preview of the most recent photo can be completely deactivated in the X100 menu system.

Comments of the photographer

The photographer that made these images appears to be someone that's been working with cameras for some time and appears to be quite talented. So I think I'll give some 'weight' to his comments about the X100:

"My experience :
I used the Optical Viewfinder (OVF) mode most of the time.

As you know, I am more a reportage photographer. Responsiveness of the camera is crucial to me in capturing the right moment. Finepix X100 is the fastest compact that I have had used before. It is responsive and yield great result from amazing colours, contrast, great ISO, sharpness and fast focusing.

I love the retro of a rangefinder styled compact. I love the aperture ring and shutter dial. I do not have to lift up my eye from the viewfinder while adjusting the settings, It is just like the great old time when I owned the Contax RTS II and III. That allowed me to capture panning shot easily.

I love this camera. It has the ability to cope with challenging issues in the street.

The 35mm lens (after crop factor) is just great. Am I limited by the lack of zoom ? No! As you can see, I do not miss the moment even with a fix lens. Its all about anticipation and move to the right place at the right time.

Thank you Fujifilm for this great camera! I hope I can have a free one! heehee"

Thanks for the link. I hope what Andy says is true about the firmware update. The friend who hung out with the Fuji reps for nearly two hours last week, a professional photographer with more than 40 years behind a lens, tried and failed to overcome the prototype X100 shortcomings.

I think it's unfortunate that Andy, who apparently reviewed it for DPReview in January -- weeks before this glitch came to light -- failed to ever mention it.

That said, I'm very interested in this camera, and aim to buy one.

It is fixed, it was a firmware thing - Andy confirmed it 100%. As the fujifilm reps have said time and time again, the cameras being shown were beta models and not production models. Even Andy's copy was a beta version of the firmware, albeit the latest iteration of it.
