Fuji X100s first user report

1. sean reid's review is up, too, and it's almost uniformly positive

2. for event photography security, the test in austin - when they care about keeping fancy cameras out - seems to be "nothing with a detachable lens". often, they have no idea wtf a leica is and i get in. physical profile, shutter noise, high ISO, window finder... i'm very interested in this little camera, but after having un-GASsed myself in the face of the m-remounted contax-g 45 (that i will be kicking myself about for a very long time), i will probably not be at the front of the purchase line. if it had a 50 equivalent on it, my opinion might be a little different.

I rented a silver x100 last spring from lensrentals.com (great experience) and I've never ever ever had so many inquiries and positive comments about a camera around my neck. Hell, I even got a random call out from a group of teenage girls!?!

FWIW, I "get it" with regard to the PJ tradition of an unobtrusive black camera, but for some reason the x100 loses its "élan" in black, at least for me. Somehow it doesn't translate.

Superb camera, though- I was really happy with my shots. Great for portraits as well. Fuji truly "gets it" with regard to taking customer feedback seriously- similar to Ricoh with the GR-series of cameras.

I've always been curious about the M6, though, which is the only reason for me holding back on purchase.

I would think that they would sell more if black was a norm. I wonder how many would buy a different camera due to lack of a black body? Many PJs don't want any shiny stuff - it can get you killed. And, others don't want to be anywhere near you if using attention getting objects. I don't get it.

I like my shiny X100. People smile at it! They like having their photo taken with an old-style camera!

Ohh man... I guess it is time to get another Digital camera after all huh!:D

No, just can't afford it yet, I will save for Leica lenses instead.;) Assuming I can!

So, you're telling me that people think your camera is a film camera and thus have nothing to fear? Their photos won't show up on the web 30 minutes after they are taken?

Exactly. The general public is unaware that people spend hours scanning film themselves or pay others to scan it for them. The general public quit using film cameras about 6-8 years ago and hardly anyone who is not an enthusiast uses film cameras now.

And you don't have nothing to fear. Instead the chance of conflict, scrutiny ang general hassle is significantly reduced compared to other classes of digital cameras.

This is not written to criticize any aspect of film photography or those who enjoy film photography. This was not written to imply film is inferior in any way to digital imaging.

The chicks really go for chrome cameras and guys with gray hair.
They just go well together, I guess.
A fountain pen in your shirt pocket pretty much tops it off.

i use the lance straps that have the quick clip on/off system. the different colours allows a quick grab for the right camera.
as i wear jeans most of the time...i am never out of fashion!

It seems to me that people notice my bright bald head coming at them before my camera regardless of strap / body color.

Camera fashion accessories - "It pays to accessorize" - I don't remember which fashion magazine penned that one..

All the " fashion models" are silver except for one black one.. hummmm

Quoted form the second link's comment section:

"Ugly and definitely not comfy.

But i guess that's what some hipsters are into."

+1 from me...:D

And the price of the straps, no thanks... But maybe I am a hipster?

Don't forget the vintage mechanical wristwatch on a leather strap.

keep the rx100?
sell the rx100?
forget the x100s...get the 27mm fuji?

Keep the RX100. Size weight pocketability... And the price can't be beat; you already own it! Forget the x100s until the next model comes out... And if you don't want it then, your decision not to get it now is certainly justified!

so much gear
so little $$

I'd personally keep the rx100. An x100s + rx100 would be an incredible compact kit....
The x100s gives you a standard 35 fov (if that's you're thing) and the rx100 does everything else ie: > or < 35mm fov.
*that's my plan anyways*

I still don't understand why Fuji didn't issue this camera in black ? I know about the special edition x100 in black. Seems odd. Black tape will have to do.

Kinda wonder if the decision to keep the X100 silver is a product differentiation decision. I prefer black too.
