how does the digital split image thingy work? nice?
My only complaint so far with the X100 after processing the photos is some weird wavy horiziontal distortion in some pics. Hopefully once I download LR 4.4 (as opposed to the RC) it'll look better. I wonder if the 4.4 release has lens profiles for the X100s...

Yes, it works great on lines that are perpendicular to the split image lines. Focus in MF is very fast too. They did a great job with it really.

what?
@jsrockit
any comments about the look and feel of the camera jpg's compared to the x100 ? ? i know that's subjective, but okay, it's subjective.

Sorry daveleo, I don't use jpegs. Not a judgement, just my choice.

You've certainly already seen this link, but yes, 4.4 is out, and it does profile the x100s! Good times ahead for you guys!

I want to get one.. but I can't justify the extra money i'd have pay after selling my X100.. plus I dropped my X100 last week and put a little dent in the ev dial, which probably drops the used price..

Hey gang, good morning. I've been playing with my new X100S since last friday and... I have to admit... It's even better then I expected it to be. While I'm still in the testing phase, I did take quite a few pictures that turned out surprisingly well. The low light capability is everything I expected. It happily took excellent pictures in situations that gave my other cameras and lenses fits.
I've mainly shot it with autofocus, program mode, auto balance, etc. the past week, just to get a feel for what the camera actually sees, and I have no complaints. It was snappy in most situations. Two issues were: close focus is still a hit-or-miss unless you actively switch it to macro. For some reason, it also doesn't like to focus on an overcast sky with some buildings in front. I had no trouble shooting into a sky with some clouds, but cloudless or fully cloudy gave it some trouble. Lack of contrast, obviously. In too bright situations, I did notice a tendency for the lens to flare. A hood will definitely be a good investment for bright days.
I've shot raw and jpg, but since I need to upgrade my raw software... I've mainly looked at the jpg's. The results, to my eye, are excellent. I went on a trip with a colleague yesterday and shot well over 400 photo's. Some with filters, some without, just having some fun. Mostly landscapes and buildings, cemetary, churches, etc. It handled it all quite well. I really like the colors on the X100S and the filters and film options do add to the fun factor of using it.
Switching the viewfinder is a treat as well. I used the OVF in situations where I had ample framing or too much light. The EVF came in handy to fine tune the framing a bit.
All in all, I'd say we'll get along just fine. Next week I'll be shooting it in mostly manual modes, just to see what I can really do with it.
If anyone feels like taking a peek at what an auto-most-of-it X100S does with jpg... here's your chance.

Straight out of the camera, so be forewarned: I mostly offer these so people can check the exif and pixel peep till their eyeballs fall out.

Been using my X100S most of the day...
I'd say that between the things I wanted changed like better MF feel, a buffer that does not black out the VF while writing sequences and more accurate AF in low light to things that are outright new like the split image....Fuji has done a phenomenal job on this upgrade.
The jpegs still really look great although just a tiny bit different. I think I figured out that the X100 looked more golden so I toggled the auto white balance that direction and got it pretty much where it I like it which is Astia, +1 hard = Kodachrome-ish...
I really don't shoot raw much anymore and I think I did around 100 frames in total out of thousands on the X100, doubt I will much with the 100S either.
As far as focus speed, it definitely feels faster overall but I think it will take more on the job shooting to see how I really feel about it.
All in all, I think Fuji had a clear winner on their hands with the first X100, I could not live without it and got by the quirks with professional technique and realistic exceptions.
The upgrade to the X100S is *well* worth any money spent considering how important it is in my work, awesome job Fuji!

I just purchased one today to accompany my X-E1 with the 18/2 & 35/1.4, now I just have to wait for the darn thing to show up!

I feel this way too, but there is no way it is as fast as Fuji claims it to be. Hopefully some firmware updates will make it faster in the future.

Lots of talk on how fw 1.01 had actually slowed things down (af). Hopefully this gets resolved....
To be honest, I was a little bummed that the af I was experiencing seemed slower than that YouTube video going around.

I sold my lovely black X100 because it was just too frustrating to use. Started using my X100s yesterday, and it is a keeper. Autofocus speed is quite usable, although not in the same league as Oly 4/3. I'm shooting raw with LR4.4 and X100 lens profile. I find I actually have to dial back the default LR sharpening to get a naturally sharp look.
