every new release looks like a 'killer' camera when it's announced, 6 months later it's usually, hey somebody please buy my digital crap (sorry for the rant)

No need to sorry!
I'll buy it on 6 months if you do that! :)

Looks like a great enthusiast compact, but there is only one thing potentially peeing in its cornflakes right now...

It's not as pretty, it doesn't have a hot shoe or OVF, but the RX100 has exactly twice the sensor area, 8 million additional pixels, and is a truly tiny pocket camera. I got one for Christmas and the image quality is unreal for something this small, plus it fits unobtrusively in a pocket, by which i mean a hip pocket, not a jacket pocket :) I've been using mine and I'm astounded by what it can do, especially in low light. It takes pictures in the dark like no camera I've ever used.

The X20 is gorgeous, though, and I can't wait to see what kind of image quality it chucks out. I would be very happy to find a place for both in my camera bag, as the X20 does look a little easier to use in terms of ergonomics.

Some people are arguing that the xtrans sensor in the Fuji X20 will bring the IQ close to the RX100. I am a recent owner of an X10 (that I got from an RFF member :)) and I am a little surprised that they got rid of the EXR pixel binning features with the X20. Shooting at 6MP is not ideal but, then again, I am not necessarily looking to get huge prints out of this camera. The dynamic range and noise, though, are things that I have found to be more limiting with small sensor compact cameras. Perhaps the xtrans sensor will really be a significant improvement but the dynamic range of the X20 using the pixel binning is incredible for a sensor of this size.

RHE, if you are putting up the RX1 as a potential contender for an everyday compact camera along with the X20 and the RX100, I feel compelled to bring up the minor point of the cost difference... :D

What about the Sony RX1 ???

i think the ovf with digital overlay is going to the key selling point.
it is going to be a "either you like it or don't" feature.
it definitely appeals to a film user like me.
comparing it with rx100 is not exactly fair.
the rx100 looks nice but i still prefer a real viewfinder.

The previously-mentioned RX100 is already 100-300 dollars more than its competitors. You can buy 4 RX100s for the cost of a single RX1. In other words...this is not a camera in the same league. The RX1 sits atop the other heap of fixed-lens compacts, like the Leica X1 and X2, Fuji X100, and Sigma DP*M cameras.

The RX1 is a fixed-lens large sensor (understatement!) compact, but it's not in the same class. It's more of a Leica replacement than a traditional digital compact camera. A perfect "Carry every day" camera except for the lack of eye-level VF built in, except that it costs as much as a decent used hatchback.

My point of view exactly! Probably need to sell some Nikon RF's to fund it.

Nah! God forbid.
But I'll get one some day! :bang:

The fuji X20 is the answer of everything i missed in the X10. Maybe fuji has ears!

Absolutely aggree.

I'm strongly considering a switch from RX100, to the X20.
I already had the X10, but I just didn't like the VF being without any informations.

You don't consider the much larger body, smaller sensor and fewer pixels a hindrance?

Seems to me that, as good as both cameras are, RX100 buyers would be much more reticent to switch to the Fuji than the other way around.

erik, its simple, its the vf. thats it. no offense to rx100 users, and to each their own. but the essential difference is wanting to shoot through a vf or having to focus while holding a camera as one does an infant with a dirty diaper. ): i think there are many who want to like the rx100, maybe even tried it, but cant get past this. imo, just as likely one would switch from either to the other...

i have and like the x10, but this is truly a major and important upgrade. also, i have never once left the x10 home because it was too big. asmof, it IS my 'pocketable' camera.

What rbelyell said. ;)

I like the IQ of the RX100 a lot tho!

I have, myself, had OVF envy and simultaneously bemoan the lack of OVFs on modern digital cameras and complain about how LCD composing is inherently inferior. However, to have a camera with a sensor as big and as clear, and a lens as bright as the RX100s is, that is small enough to easily fit in a hip pocket, I am willing to compromise.

I don't doubt the X20/X10 is a joy to use, and the VF looks wonderful, but it's simply not pocketable the way the RX100 is. It's a neck/shoulder strap camera or a camera bag camera. And if I want a camera to sling on my shoulder or carry in a dedicated bag I am spoiled for choice with DSLRs and Rangefinders.

The X20 looks wonderful, but the main reason I can't see people switching to the X20 from the RX100 is that they probably wanted the pocketability, and the VF may not be enough to draw them to a bigger, bulkier camera with a smaller sensor and fewer pixels (but a brighter lens.)

I guess it's all preference, really, and I completely understand the whole LCD hatred thing, as I was one of the most vocal people I know who complained about it. But confronted with the RX100, I decided I could live with it. I"ve had the LCD lit directly by a bright winter sun and i could still see it just fine. It's a brilliant screen. Also, I do hold it like I mean it, with hand under the lens barrel and the other around the body-grip. I don't hold it out on fingertips like it's covered in sick ;)

Eye-level VFs are inherently superior for stability and visibility, but they are not a killer feature...for me :)
