Fuji XE-1 and IR

Anyone use the XE-1/Xpro1 for IR photography. I just put a IR720 filter on my 18-55 and the XE-1 seems to be quite good with IR visibility. However I'am having some problems with setting a custom white balance. Any tips or tricks?

There are two separate things going on here: IR sensitivity and "color" response to IR. I tried IR with the XPro 1 (can't remember the filter) and found that the camera worked well with my old 35 Summaron -- IR sensitivity was about 1/15 of visible light. But the color was, due to the filter of course, all magenta. The resulting file looks great in a B&W conversion, but is not the "false color" image that some might expect. I assume that the XE-1 has the same IR cut filter as its older sibling.

You can get the false color effect with a custom white balance. Been doing that with almost all my digital cameras including my nikon which have very very strong IR cut filter on the sensor

The following is info that I used from reading about what other people have tried from the web.

- b&w mode if u want not to c the false color look
- iso at 6400 to get a hand holdable shot
- color temp in white balance at 2500K
- the ir filter was Hoya r72

The results look ok using this method. But check out the discussion thread here starting around post 277, the pictures from a full ir converted camera are just outstanding.

For those of you without IR filters, you can use an unexposed portion of developed slide film for a similar effect. We used to do this in my photo class, with varying degrees of success.

it is possible. Tried it today with an R72. Exposure time 1/60 @ iso 3200, F2.0. But it is indeed possible.
