... is there anything wrong with the Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro as a full-frame home for my old AIS lenses? ... I'm easily pleased btw, if the d70 were full-frame I'd not be asking

the sensor and jpegs on the S5 Pro were supposed to be glorious with DR unmatched by even the D700.

i remember though it had weird issues like having a Fuji interface, using different batteries, and i am not sure how well RAW conversions were done because of the unique sensor (sound familiar?)

I had one. Yes, the UI is different from Nikon's and klunkier, and it uses a different battery from the D200's. The best raw conversions come from Fuji Hyper-Utility, but ACR is perfectly usable, and in fact sometimes does a better job of taking advantage of the extra highlight pixels for extended DR. Not every converter is able to recognize the highlight pixels, though. Regardless of converter, the Super CCD in the S5 is well-behaved with respect to spatial detail, and doesn't generate the sort of grunge at the fine-detail level that can come from the current X-Trans sensors.

Some times I feel like I'm at a techie convention

The contract I had previously, sat me with seven other developers. four of them, beside myself, were keen photographers. There's a lot of it about in the engineering/software world.

🙂

... I'm a simple soul, I like the d70 ... as soon as one puts an old lens on it the software is shocked into a stupor and it works just like an F ... I read the s5 was full-frame in an add and got a bit giddy

And I can't actually recommend Kodak DSC Pro 14n to anyone today 🙂 I have warm memories of it, but it's absolutely terrible at iso over 64 and has very poor low-light usability (due to the fact that the sensor gets hot during longer exposures, high-iso usability is non-existing).

But as bit of Nikon history (being F80 converted to digital) it just might be interesting enough to some even today 🙂

Fujifilm S5 is something I've been very much interested in for a long time. I'm D700 user now and wouldn't change to it, but as a second camera for portraits, it just might be worth it. If I could find one really cheaply that is 🙂
