I recently traded this lens and it came right back because the manual focus was very stiff. It's a relatively new lens and I hadn't used it much. I doubt I ever tried manual focus. It turns like there is no grease. It's not binding or any rough spots, just rather difficult to turn.

So I wonder, is this normal or is something wrong? Not to worried since I only AF but I did want to sell or trade it and now I guess I'm stuck with it.

No, mine is free and easy to turn. How long have you owned it? Has it been bumped at any time?

no, a stiff focus is not normal.
my 1st new 18mm had a gritty feel with the stop ring, like sand was in it, I sent it back for a replacement to Adorama, the replacement was perfect!
(they have a 30 day replacement warranty if it is defective).

While I would not call my 18's focus ring smooth by any stretch of the imagination, it's definitely easy to operate with a finger. I have a very early build. I would hope the later builds are tighter than mine.

As other mentioned, the focus-by-wire collar requires very little force to turn.

I wonder - do you have a filter or screw-in hood attached to the lens?
