I recently traded this lens and it came right back because the manual focus was very stiff. It's a relatively new lens and I hadn't used it much. I doubt I ever tried manual focus. It turns like there is no grease. It's not binding or any rough spots, just rather difficult to turn.
So I wonder, is this normal or is something wrong? Not to worried since I only AF but I did want to sell or trade it and now I guess I'm stuck with it.

No, mine is free and easy to turn. How long have you owned it? Has it been bumped at any time?

Had the same with 35/1.4, never bothered, nor did the buyer.

no, a stiff focus is not normal.
my 1st new 18mm had a gritty feel with the stop ring, like sand was in it, I sent it back for a replacement to Adorama, the replacement was perfect!
(they have a 30 day replacement warranty if it is defective).

what?
Just tested my 18, and focusing ring is very smooth and comfortable.

While I would not call my 18's focus ring smooth by any stretch of the imagination, it's definitely easy to operate with a finger. I have a very early build. I would hope the later builds are tighter than mine.

As other mentioned, the focus-by-wire collar requires very little force to turn.
I wonder - do you have a filter or screw-in hood attached to the lens?

No, but not sure if it would matter. The lens in AF moves independent of the focusing ring.I wonder - do you have a filter or screw-in hood attached to the lens?
