Fun with the Hasselblad 907x

Ha well I don’t want to be blamed for having killed someone! Many thanks indeed - admittedly though I do ask myself if any of my pictures are any good. It’s a constant question, not ever sure that I have a good answer.
 
Fulvia Follies ... ongoing

I'm getting my Lancia Fulvia Coupe ready for a complete interior overhaul. I pulled it out into the church parking lot to make some "before" photos of the interior ... haven't processed those yet ... but got annoyed—for the last time!—with all the stickers on the windows.

I removed them. It looks a lot cleaner to my eye.

The contrasty sunlight would have been a problem with any other of my cameras, but it was no problem with the Hasselblad 907x.

A few weeks back, I pulled the CFVII 50c back off my 907x to use it on my 500CM. When I returned it to the 907x, the 907x body no longer recognized the back at all. Hmm. After a few minutes of close inspection, I found that one of the connecting pins on the lower right of the 907x body had gone missing.

Nothing to do but send it to Hasselblad USA for repair. I included a photocopy of my original invoice "... just in case you decide this was a warranty issue." I have no idea how I could have put stress on that pin for it to disappear like that, but I have had the camera for more than two years, after all. The hole that the missing pin should have been in had an oddly enlarged shape to it, with a little chunk missing out of one side.

Well, the service estimate arrived about 8 days after my camera was received by Hasselblad USA. The repair, and return shipping, was covered 100% by warranty. The repair was completed within 24 hours after I approved the estimate and took another 6 days to get to me via UPS Ground service. All is working perfectly now. I even tested it on a copy stand in the manner that in the past I have had some odd behavior ... No odd behavior, perfect operation.

It's only conjecture, but I suspect that that odd behavior was the result of the pin wobbling in what might have been a tiny void in the structure of the camera's mating back surface, a void which ultimately broke through under the light stress of the back being released from the body and let the pin go flying away.

Whatever caused the problem, kudos and thanks to Hasselblad USA for taking care of the camera in an efficient manner and covering it under warranty. It's great to have it back ... I have a bunch of work waiting to get done with the 907x that I can get going on now again. :D

A complete interior job is likely to be expensive these days. But a man must do what has to be done.

The job has been completed. All new flooring to original spec (rubber matting overlaid with area carpet mats); both front and rear seats rebuilt from the bottom up with handmade leather covers; dashboard surround restored completely; new wood dash fascia; new retractor-type three point seat belts installed; door sills and package tray redone; window mechanisms and locks in the doors overhauled and renewed with new felts, guides, channel rubbers; fuel filler neck support/surround remade and installed; trunk underlayer mat and mat replaced; all new bulbs in the dash board indicators and instruments, new replica clock installed; NOS rear view mirror and interior light installed; new wood-rimmed steering wheel; and a few other details.
Yes, it cost a bit ... about the same as a Hasselblad 907x and two XCD lenses. Came out beautifully.

Made this quickie photo before the new steering wheel arrived:

Not sure what you mean. The CFVII 50c works beautifully on the 500CM. Seamless integration, beautiful results. That's never been a problem.

It doesn't appear that you can buy a CFVII 50c separate from the 907x body attachment. If so, I can't find it.

No it’s only available with the 907x ‘body’, though I’ve seen some better prices in the secondary market. I bought mine with the intention of using it on my 500c as well as with the 907x / XCD lenses, but honestly the XCD lenses are so good I just didn’t see the point in using it on my 500c other than just for the novelty of it. Other thing is that - at least in my personal experience using it - your focus has to be so precise that any deviation will be magnified through the use of the digital back. So that’s based on either the user’s focusing error, a bit of camera shake or the camera not being perfectly calibrated.

As much as I appreciate it, I’ll probably end up selling off my film Hasselblad equipment at some point.
