FYI - dp3m review at Luminous Landscape

Thanks, Gary. I picked up a DP1M to complement my 2M while I was in NYC--fortunately just at the moment when the big price cut went into effect.

The author of this LL review has been one of the primary DP*M GAS machines, oops, I mean promoters, on the net. I'm sure the 75 is great. The author has in fact been saying he thinks it is the best of the three in terms of resolution, color, and lack of CA.

Maybe, just maybe... when that goes down in price, too?! If I could do it over, I would probably rather have the 28 and the 75 rather than the 28 and the 45, but a 21 or 24 at the wide end would be even better. 24 and 75 would be wonderful.

These are my dedicated backpacking cameras. I also love the monochrome high ISO images they produce and don't find them or the software hard to use at all.

These are great quirky cameras, but I can't bring myself to buy another due to lack of lightroom support and high ISO. I'll just stick with the Dp2m and spend my cash elsewhere.

I hear ya, and a lot of people agree. Doesn't bother me, tho. I was already used to that kind of annoying workflow when I was using RPP for M8 conversions and then importing into LR.

Some people refuse to use lens/body configurations that require Cornerfix for the same reason. Those are decisions everyone has to make for themselves.

I can't bring myself to

Speaking of things I can't bring myself to do: taking a $6000+ body/lens combo backpacking lol ! The DP*M series is a dream come true for me. The cost of Velvia + processing here in Europe is simply too high. The price of the DP1M on sale in the States was no more than 30 rolls of Velvia, bought developed and scanned, here in France.

I'm starting to seriously consider a DP2m ... I like the focal length more than the other offerings.

I think I may have to sell a couple of things as I seriously need to look into this Foveon sensor. The image threads consistently show that this camera/sensor is special!

Man that is getting expensive :(

If I did not already have the 60 for my xp1.. The dp3m could really give me serious gas. As it is I can wait and c what else comes out. The rumor about dp4m/dpz last month has me in the hold button.

I just got a DP2m on Friday and I'm blown away by it. It writes files slowly but it's got a very simple interface that is very intuitive to me and the output is just incredible, it produces edge to edge sharpness that has to be seen to be believed. I'm a bit of a gear hound but I can easily see the DP2m becoming my primary camera, at least for low ISO stuff.

If the DP3m is good or even better as the review suggests, I'll definitely be thinking about it, maybe after it has a price drop like the other DPs. Foveon is really something special.

A 21 or 24 equiv would be my dream combo w/ the existing 45.

It is nice that they added face detection on the dp3m. I wonder if it will become available as a fw update for the other cameras.

Af speed is about the same or just slightly slower than the x100 u had Keith. Mf implementation is a bit better.

Good luck

Use the fastest sd card u have.. I use ones rated at 95mbs. It helps. But the good news is the dp Merrill's buffer can hold 7 shots in large raw or 9 in medium.. Good number of shots can be had while waiting for the sd write to complete.

Gary

Is write speed a real issue for the types of shooting this camera excels at? I would think all the film shooters who complain about people "spray and praying" would love the slow speed!

In most cases it is not. But if u need to make a quick check on the picture u just have taken.. Then there could be about a 3 second wait w/ the fastest sd card. For example to c if I got the facial expression I was after or to show my friends the shot I just took of them.

Gary

Yeah, in practice the slow write hasn't been an issue because the camera will still shoot even while it's writing previous photos. But like Gary said for reviewing it takes a few seconds. But otherwise I kind of like how it slows things down.

The FW updates on the DP1M and 2M both added face detection

SPP has never crashed for me. The camera is responsive. The Franiec grip really helps balance the camera and looks great, too.

I can see how it would be the perfect camera for that. AND they are a bargain compared to other APS-C compacts even. For me, scans are too horrible or priced ridiculously high (for quality) in NYC for me to continue with film. Happy we have all of these wonderful digital options these days.

Hmmm.. Looks like I missed the last two updates. My dp1m is at 1.01 and dp2m is at 1.02. The latest dp2m is at 1.04.

Thanks for hu.

It seems that every time one of these fixed lens compacts with high IQ hits the market there's a cry for the manufacturer to bring out a version with interchangable lenses.

Sigma seem very fixed in their mindset about the DP series to me and I really don't see it happening. Personally it wouldn't interest me!
